Losing the Peace extract in Star Trek Magazine 19

Balancing Destiny, Full Circle and A Singular Destiny, Losing the Peace is the final step in knitting the whole post-Borg invasion galaxy together, and Leisner's done a fantastic job if this chapter is anything to go by.
Please, let's wait until reading at least two chapters before praising the novel as a whole.

Agreed. What is the chronological order of the post-Destiny stories?

While there are a few overlaps, the chronology so far is basically:

Destiny Trilogy
Losing the Peace
A Singular Destiny
Full Circle
Over a Torrent Sea

Synthesis, Unworthy and Typhon Pact series to come.
Actually, I believe ASD and the post-Borg War segments of Full Circle happen more or less simultaneously. (Though I did read an early draft of FC, so I missed any reference to the Typhon Pact Kirsten might have slipped in later.) And OaTS does also cover the months immediately after the invasion, though a lot more quickly.

Just read the excerpt, looks great, can't wait for the full book now :)

About the cover, is it significant Picard isn't wearing a comm-badge (sorry that's prob just me being nit-picky)

Yeah, there were several Typhon Pact references in Full Circle. I also thought it best to sort of ignore the first chapter of OaTS and just put that book at the end, since every other chapter comes after the others. If anyone wants a proper, detailed chronology I believe there are websites that have put one together...

Looks great! I haven't followed the TNG relaunch except Destiny, but this might convince me for now at least...

Well, you're not the first to pick that nit. But, the combadge has been added to the most recent cover, so no, not significant.

Will we see everyone at home or with family? Since we saw both Geordi and Picard.
Sorry, just gonna have to wait for Chapter Two for that answer. ;)

Great beginning. Nice to see Picard at home again, along with his wife. Can't wait til the book comes out so I can enjoy this new story. Should be interesting I bet too. Nice to see that Geordi's dad is on a Luna too. Geordi should of taken that position aboard the Titan.

When it comes to Geordi, I agree. Especially after Data died. The memories aboard the Enterprise would be too strong. Vale is alright, but I thought Geordi was the natural choice (obviously so did Riker) if it wasn't going to be Worf. The repore between Geordi and Riker was perfect. Just look at Insurrection. The moment where Geordi tells Riker that they need to eject the core, and doesn't wait for the order, was great. I took this to mean that they knew each other so well and worked so well together, that Riker was thinking "of course he didn't wait for the order. He knows what to do..." or something along that line.

It's also pretty cool that Geordi's dad is still serving in Starfleet, and survived the Borg invasion to boot :techman:. I'm still holding out hope that the USS Hera is located at some point, even if it's just the wreck, so Geordi can get some closure after 11 years...

My assumption, after Reading "Q and A" and "Greater Than the Sum" was that the authors had decided it was better to leave it a mystery. Some disappearances are never solved, and Geordi's closure lies in learning to truly accept this, as difficult as it is. At least, if I remember correctly that was where the books seemed to be hinting...

I still haven't finished Death in Winter... but I might race through the relaunch to get to this book because I'm very impressed by the excerpt.

I would also like to know what happened to the Hera, but my guess is they are going to leave that unknown. Maybe it's for the best.

Just finished reading part of the extract, and I just wanted to say that I especially appreciated featuring a major sequence set in Mogadishu. I've mentioned before that one criticism I have of Trek is that when it portrays the Earth of the future, it tends to be very American- or Euro-centric -- we rarely see glimpses of life in the continents that are currently marginalized in the real world, such as Africa or South America, and we rarely see Humans of the 23rd and 24th Centuries who are not European or American.

So it was really cool to see a sequence set in Somalia, in a Mogadishu that's prosperous and at peace -- and to discover that one of our major characters, LaForge, in spite of having an American accent, is apparently himself a Somalian! :)

Credit where due: Geordi's personnel file in "The Next Phase" established that he was born in the African Confederation, regardless of his American accent. And I agree, the "third world" has been too much ignored in Trek, and I thought, if I was going to have this scene in Africa, it should show that all of Earth shared equally in the advances of the 24th century.

All the same, many thanks for a great little message there. :bolian:

^Agreed :bolian:. Trek's culture of inclusion and equality has always been the heart of the franchise. It's always nice to see examples that it is still the case. Good on ya' Mr. Leisner :)

I was just on S&S.com, and they've added a browse inside feature for LtP. Suprisingly the monkey's actually put up at least parts of the prolouge and the first 13 chapters, along with a teaser for Titan: Synthesis.

Edit: I just started reading, and it's not the whole chapters, just the first few pages of each. For example, chapter 1 ended on page 15 (which didn't even get to Geordi's part) and Ch. 2 started on p39.

Oh god, the prologue was heartbreaking. I am really, really looking forward to this book.

I just read through bits of the first three chapters, and from what I read this book is gonna be great. I really liked the bit of chapter three with Chen and Elfiki, those two seem like they could be a fun pair.
