Looming global arms race to create superintelligent AI

Forget about superintelligent AIs being created by a company, university, or a rogue programmer with Einstein-like IQ. Hollywood and its AI-themed movies like Transcendence and Her

I'm still firmly in the camp that even the government money isn't enough to create strong AI..it's either going to be self-emergent out of complex systems or from a big company. Governments are also proving too slow to react to technological implications. Some US congressmen haven't even ever sent an e-mail. However, If AI does come from a DARPA like facility, I'm betting the country of origin is China's wildly open and creative AI industry.

it's either going to be self-emergent out of complex systems

"Emergence" is a fancy way of saying "I don't know. It just happened."

Complex patterns in fractals are data, but not information, like DNA, for example.

Yeah yeah yeah, A.I. it has been loomin since the days of the PDP-1 :vulcan:

Its just like fusion power, ITS CLOSE! I HAVE BEEN TELLING YOU SINCE THE 50'S!

I totally read that as "superintelligent A1".

Sentient steak sauce? RUN FOR THE HILLS!

Steak sauce?

Steak sauce.

As with so many other times, I always learn something new on this Board. I was reading the ingredients of the A-1 steak sauce at the link, and saw that it had Xanthan Gum in it. I checked "Memory Alpha" and also "Wrigleys Guide to Gums of the World", but was unable to get any information.

Does anyone know who the Xanthans are, and how in the dickens do the "Good People at A-1®" get the Xanthian Gum in the bottle? I am picturing some Xanthans standing around a Communal Kettle, chewing their gum until, in the peak of flavor and moisture content, they release the Gum into the Kettle from whatever orifice serves them.

So, how do you like your steak? Medium? MediGum Rare?

:techman: :wtf: :scream: (The Little Brown Dude is saying "I want more"

"Don't cover it. Discover it, with A.1."® (1980s tag line)

Intelligence AI work for the government. But they are oxymorons.

..ah, yes, the Common Air-Breathing Moron

Repeat after me. There is no such thing as a superintelligent AI.

Yes, right now of course. It's presupposing accelerated change of course which is a fact.

The basic point of the talk was that if society put the kind of money and effort into creating a positive Singularity that we put into things like wars or television shows, then some pretty amazing things might happen. To quote a revised version of the talk, given to a different audience just after the financial crisis of Fall 2008:
Look at the US government’s response to the recent financial crisis – suddenly they’re able to materialize a trillion dollars here, a trillion dollars there. What if those trillions of dollars were being spent on AI, robotics, life extension, nanotechnology and quantum computing? It sounds outlandish in the context of how things are done now — but it’s totally plausible.
If we made a positive Singularity a real focus of our society, I think a ten year time-frame or less would be eminently possible.

Now comes a book by documentary filmmaker James Barrat — Our Final Invention: Artificial Intelligence and the End of the Human Era — reviewed here on the ThinkAdvisor site -- Are Killer Robots the Next Black Swan? — in which Barrat discusses a scenario sketched out by Alexander Wissner-Gross, a scientist-engineer with affiliations at Harvard and MIT, that seems remarkably similar to mine. Opines Wissner-Gross:

“If you follow the money, finance has a decent shot at being the primordial ooze out of which AGI emerges.”

Barrat elaborates: : “In other words, there are huge financial incentives for your algorithm to be self-aware—to know exactly what it is and model the world around it.”

Yesterday, for example, well known market commentator and Director of Floor Operations for UBS, Art Cashin, pointed out that a hypothesis began circulating among those on the floor of the NYSE that an instantaneous and uniform selloff around 10:00 a.m. was the result of a "computer using artificial intelligence" to parse a highly anticipated speech from Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke for any indications of providing further stimulus to the markets.
Here is a rather alarmist view of the Wall Street situation, but indicative of how far AI has come.

http://www.futuristspeaker.com/2014...e-will-be-crashing-the-stock-market-in-3-2-1/

At the center of this rapid buying and selling of stock are a series of high-frequency trading machines run by the quants, the math-whiz kids who are a type of hackers only on Wall Street.
Without having people at the center of these trades, we have lost the core ingredient, our ability to accurately assess value.
The invasion of high-frequency trading machines is now forcing capitalism far away from anything either Adam Smith or the founders of the NYSE could possibly find virtuous.

...in my opinion a machine can never have judgment; the side circuit is a hunting circuit, the programming of which says "look for so-and-so within such-and-such limits; when you find it, carry out your basic instruction."

2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY by Stanley Kubrick and Arthur C. Clarke
Interviewer: Do you believe that Hal has genuine emotions?

Astronaut David Bowman: Well, he acts like he has genuine emotions. He's programmed that way to make it easier for us to talk to him. As to whether or not he has feelings is something I don't think anyone can truthfully answer.

To address the OP topic directly and seriously, if there were such a pursuit, my feeling would be that it would much less be a "looming arms race" and much more a very quiet, hush-hush as they could get it to be, under-the-radar, masked as something else kind of pursuit.
