Looks like I'll be moving soon!

For the past two years I've been living with my sister and her husband. While they have made great roommates and leave me alone for the most part, the time has come for me to move on. My sister is currently pregnant and soon they will be wanting to start their own family and don't need me sticking around.

As luck would have it an old friend of mine is currently on the market for a roommate, the only problem right now is I was telling him my lease was up mid-April (which I really believed it was) however I found out today my lease isn't up till mid-May. So he'd have to wait another month for me to get in there, because it isn't like I'd just pack up and leave my sister while I'm still being expected of to pay rent for May.

I'm real excited, except for one prospect. As it stands my friend smokes inside his place, and I have a cat. I've explained to him by concerns for my cats health, and he said he'd stop smoking inside (or at least smoke in his room), but even that compromise has me cautious, since animals are highly susceptible to cigarette smoke.

Hmm. What's he getting out of this?

A roommate who will share part of the rent. For the last six months or so he's been living in this big apartment by himself because his last roommate ripped him off and disappeared. He's barely making rent as it is (even with his full time job).

If you don't want the smoke, then moving in with a smoker is a very bad idea. I speak from personal experience.

I know, I've spoken to him about this a few times, and he seems willing to alter his habits, IE: not smoke inside. If I do move in with him I'm going to get that in writing, I may be a smoker myself, but there will be no smoking in a place that I live at.

Ahem. Sorry to rain on it, but odds are against this working out. Better to move in with a nonsmoker.

Which is why I haven't committed to it yet. Aside from the smoking this (at the moment) is my best bet.

If the smoking is in any way a dealbreaker you definitely shouldn't do it. Don't count on him to change his habits for your sake--most people won't.

I might have another option as far as roommates go, but it's a long shot. As it stands he's my best hope, because I'm not moving with my sister.
