Looking for something new to read--something in the hard sci-fi genre, not fantasy. Also not into Star Trek fiction (for some reason) I like a lot of different things, the last things I read were some older John Scalzi books, the Murderbot Diaries by Martha Wells.

Have thought about reading The Expanse? As that is considered hard science fiction. The novels are quite good.

I literally just finished The Calculating Stars this evening. It is technically a very good story--alternative history and well researched. I thought the story itself was a little bland in a Downtown Abbey kind of way, but I liked it well enough to request a hold on The Fated Sky at my library.

If you don't mind an older novel, I can highly recommend Encounter with Tiber by John Barnes and Buzz Aldrin. It's quite an inspirational story about generational astronauts on a trip to a star in hopes of finding alien life that they think once visited our solar system.
