Looking for CG artist

I’m looking for a CG artist to bring to life a stunning piece of concept art by artist Tony Treloar for my upcoming sci-fi web series, New Gods:

Solar-Surfer-Final.jpg

Ideally, I’d like to see a rendering of the surfboard and sail, and possibly several seconds of animation of the board sailing into the Sun, as in the image.

This is a paying gig, although the budget is tight so it’ll have to be negotiable. The goal is for this to demonstrate both your work and how well we work together. If things go well, it could lead to an offer to do Visual FX for the New Gods series, and bigger pay.

Look forward to hearing from you soon,
Vince

It's a pretty spectacular piece of work, no doubt about it. It makes no sense, but what the hell if it looks good. :)

Trust me, it makes sense in the story. Isn't that what they all say? Ha!

So, Axeman..... interested?

In New Gods, solar surfing is a sport enjoyed by the elite of Avalon. It involves sailing a small board in the narrowest possible parabolic orbit to the Sun, like a speeding comet. Once the surfer steps on the board, the organic nanotech in his/her body links to the nanotech of the board, providing limited protection from vacuum and radiation, status and instrumentation displays, and control of the board. In other words, the board and surfer appear to be open to space.

The surfer aims the board toward the Sun. The board gains speed from the Sun’s gravitational pull until the last possible instant, when the surfer deploys a solar sail. The sail picks up the photon push from the Sun, steering the board around the Sun. Once safely on the other side, the sail retracts, the board turns 180 degrees, and the engine retrofires, slowing the board and returning to the starting point.

It’s an exhilarating and extremely dangerous sport, for if the sail deploys an instant too late, the surfer will plummet into the Sun!

Hell no! lol

I should rephrase that. It's an interesting subject, but the amount of work involved is beyond my meagre abilities at this time. To do this justice you need to be able to do some nice cloth simulation, character animation and building, and the render times for doing stuff near a sun filling the screen would be harsh. Right now I'm doing a pretty simple planet and ship animation and each evening I knock out maybe 10 seconds of animation. That's an hour making a model I needed, a couple of hours setting up the scene and lighting, then letting it render overnight at maybe 3 minutes per frame for 300 frames.

At a guess, to do a couple of minutes animation worth a damn might take me several weeks of evenings spent modelling and animating. It stops being fun real quick. I do my stuff here and there when I get time, if I have to do it as work it's going to be wanted asap.

I know what you mean. At times New Gods has proceeded at a similar pace, if not slower. Fortunately tho', it's never felt like work...
