...with a microphone and the willingness to read and record a short piece of text, nothing difficult.

Why? Trying to see what I do right and wrong. Recordet myself reading that little text, sounds somewhat strange. Have someone from America who will read it and now I need another one from England. For the difference and because the text is actually written in a british accent.

That’s what’s known as “pronunciation spelling” or eye dialect.

This website is a good reference source for audio samples of dozens of different regional British accents.

What about the RP accent? This is what is used on the BBC World Service. It is a clear and formal accent, similar to what the queen uses.

Surely you don't think that all text that reflects a person's spoken dialect has to be insulting, do you? I am from the Southern US, and we get mocked all the time--and there is a BIG difference between mockery and simply showing the dialect as it is, because it's a part of the characters.

Adding to that--English has such different dialects that (for instance) an American reader might not be able to duplicate that accent appropriately, unless he or she has very strong skills with that accent, or acting training. I should think it would be far more appropriate to have someone who actually has an accent normally speak in that way; an outsider doing it is far more likely to be mocking, if not done just right.

I'm having trouble discerning what he finds racist at all. I mean, the text is obviously Dickens, so I assumed he wasn't reacting to that but perhaps to the vague distinction made by the OP between English and British? Or perhaps that it seems apparent the OP isn't exceedingly familiar with the many different English accents in Britain (which isn't surprising, since English is the OP's second language)? But that is in no way racist.

There's nothing racist at all, no value judgment. Sometimes in America we even joke about "speaking American." A value judgment (this accent is inferior, this spelling system is inferior) is a different matter. And there is NONE of that here.

From what I recall, TerokNor is in the process of learning how to speak English and is trying to understand the differences in pronunciation between different accents. I have no idea what could possibly be racist about this.

That's always a splendid recommendation. It features a lot of different accents from all over the British Isles (and even American ones). Rose Tyler speaks Cockney, doesn't she?

It will take some getting used to before you fully understand the dialogue, though. At first, I only understood two thirds or so of what was said and occasionally missed some important details. I recommend using subtitles. (I didn't use them but it's a lot easier that way.)
