Looking ahead: Star Trek The DVD

Yeah okay, I know it's still close to a year before the movie hits the theaters and probably a good six months after that before it will come out on DVD and Blu-Ray.

But since we speculate a lot here on the BBS, let's talk about what we'd all like to see included (besides the movie, that is). Personally, the thing I'd like to see most is an extended, director's cut, as I'm sure that a lot got filmed that most likely won't make it to the final, theatrical cut. And I'm not talking about just a section with deleted scenes, I want a longer movie on the DVD, complete with finished FX.

In-depth interviews with Abrams and Nimoy would be up there as well, along with some good documetaries on creating the sets, the location shoots and the all the things that will make this Trek movie so different from all the others.

What am I leaving out?

Here's a hypothetical list of Special Features for J.J. Abrams' Star Trek:

- How The Future Begins: Pre-Production of Star Trek
- Redesigning the Future: The Look and Feel of Star Trek
- There Are Always Possibilities: The Cast and Crew
- A New Enterprise: The Visual Effects of Star Trek
- Two Spocks: Leonard Nimoy and Zachary Qinto
- The Doors go "Swoosh": The Music and Sounds of Star Trek
- Feature length commentaries:
--- Writers Orci and Kertzman
--- Producers and Director J. J. Abrams
--- Visual Effects Producers: ILM
--- Isolated Score and Commentary with Michael Giacchino
- Production Art Gallery

I doubt we'll get quite this much, but this is my "Dream DVD Feature Set", and would probably require 2 DVDs/Blu-Ray Disks.

It's quite rare that the first DVD release is the improved director's cut. I'm sure there'll be a theatrical cut released on the first DVD, and maybe (like on the "Lost" boxed sets) some bonus "never before seen" scenes.

Then, about a year later, if JJ was frustrated that he filmed some great stuff he couldn't use in a regular cinematic running time, there'll be a second release - and the fans will scream double dipping! - and that, as with the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy re-release, might have some longer scenes dropped into certain places.

Good comment, Therin! I couldn't have said it better. I guess you use those antennae for mind reading as well... :alienblush:

Hopefully they will release the press event where the whole crew is at their stations, in costume, fielding questions from reporters. Chris Pine will forget Yelchin's name and introduce him simply as "the gentleman who portrays Chekov."

Out of all possible bonus features I'd like a commentary and deleted/extended scenes the most.

What am I leaving out?

Full-length commentary by Shatner: "Now, if I had been in this scene..." ;)

More seriously, I'd like a commentary by Abrams.

I'd like a commentary with Abrams, of course...and maybe a few of the actors.

But I seriously would like a commentary by Shatner. I think it would be frakkin' hilarious.

They could record it as he's watching the film for the first time. A stream of consciousness thing.

It would rock I tell you!

That would make it the first DVD I ever boycotted. That is saying a lot... I even have a DVD of Nemesis! :alienblush:

Or, you know, you'd have the option of not watching the commentary. ;) Not that you have anything to worry about in this case!

It would be kind of funny if some DVD commentaries had people not even associated with their own movies. Like you get Johnny Depp doing commentary for Old School, or whatever.
