Long Lost or Unknown Family

Though his tenure with the Maquis was less about terrorism and more about distinguishing himself from Will. And the whole thing was pretty non-committal, as he gave up in the end with little resistance.

Evil twin is a different trope. Sometime its a relative other times just a look alike. Was Tom a badguy?
Maybe not the same ballpark but definitely the same sport. Tom wasn't evil but he was a jerk with bad intentions. Besides, he was mean to O'Brien.

...Who got very sympathetic evil twins of his own. But that really is a different trope, as those, too, had nothing to do with "long lost" or "family".

^My issue with TNG is that by the end of the show, every main character has a dead parent or both.
This is problematic, in a way. On one hand Humanity has access to medicine that will make you believe in Miracles, again. For example: correcting for a disfiguring accident is most easily achieved. On the other hand, Humans live to be well-into their hundreds - not as youthful individuals. but rather, surviving day-to-day with the ravages of Old Age. They're called the Golden Years, when they should be called the Rust Years. And the Grim Reaper's death-dealing has lost none of its potency ...

Shinzon, Tom Riker, Lore are evil twins to one degree or another. Sela is a kinda a first cousin of that trope. So it's been done a bit. (Although I don't believe that Tom Riker is a bad guy as such)

So, my Dad, who was a fighter pilot in the Pacific in WWII, once told me "You just might have a half brother on Okinawa."
