"Logic extremists"

I was reasaonbly psoitive about Discovery at the start... then it's eroded a bit. Then I heard the term "Logic extremists".

I searched Giphy for "stupid" and I feel this image basically says more than I ever can.

Given the Vulcan religion has logic as a means to an end and not an actual end itself, I'm not sure what's so strange.

People keep forgetting the Vulcans are a bunch of ax-crazy psychopaths kept barely in check by Vulcan Space Jesus-Buddha's teachings.

Honestly, I like we're seeing multiple varieties of Vulcans and their beliefs.

In RL, logic is only useful in the achieving of a goal not the goal itself. You can very logically pursue the extermination of all Non-Vulcans.

And your problem is what? That a movement would have an extreme element? Logic can used to rationalize all sorts of behaviour.

Including the notion that illogical humans are a threat to Vulcan society and customs. To someone who truly believes that, perhaps they can even logically conclude that violence may be a solution.

Also, it's not like you name yourself the Terrorist Brotherhood of EvilTM.

The Christian Identity Movement doesn't call itself "The Nazi Church" but that's what it is.

I wonder who Logic Extremists equate to in modern societal representation? Scientists, environmentalists? Are they good guys or bad guys? Oooh can we reason enough consistent valid premises into a conclusion that logic is capable of being extreme??

Logic Extremists at least kind of embrace the nerd. The mean nerd.. :mallory:

To be fair, one of the things which was a less than flattering portrayal of us was the revelation when nerds became super-rich and had their own culture in Silicon Valley post-tech boom - it turned out a lot of us were assholes.

:)

They equate with extremists. Religious. Political. Philosophical. All sorts of ous, cals and ists

Tolkien hated metaphors. If he was going to talk about WW1, he'd talk about WW1.

He loved applicability, though.

I.e. you could talk about Vulcan hating the Federation as Brexit or Syria but it was always actually about Vulcans.

I really like the idea of Vulcan extremists and the name could be better but it's not horrific.

There were many times in season one of TOS where Spock advocated violence/killing as a logical course of action. He got called out by McCoy as being dispassionate and callous quite often, but nevertheless, he was often right. Sometimes violence is seen by Vulcans as the most logical response to a tricky problem. Logic can be applied to rationalize any course of action, even extreme ones.

It was established in Enterprise that vulcan can view themselves as superior and are inclined to militism.

These are likely holdovers from the ENT era and likely stired by Romulans who would love to see the hated federation tear itself to shred during a war.

In fact the romulans are buddying up with the Klingons i believe at this period of time.

i feel like between enterprise and now this, i've had my fill of factions within vulcan society (embrace of emotion, isolationism, logic extremism) as a story point. but as part of this universe, i don't see how this is any less okay than the vulcan isolationist movement seen all the way back in season 7 of TNG.

at least they're not monolithic like so many other star trek societies have been.

I like the idea the Romulans stole cloaking technology from the Klingons instead of the reverse. People keep forgetting the Romulans use their technology and not vice versa.

if one were to believe in logic as an ultimate guide to life and reality then one believes in logic existentially,as a part of their very existence. if one comes to a logical conclusion no matter how erroneous, that Sarek and his type mingling with the inferior are a threat to one's society and racial existence, then one may consider resorting to extreme measures to protect their race and existence.
