The long-in-development remake of "Logan's Run" appears to be gaining momentum with commericals director Carl Rinsch in talks to direct the sci-fi actioner for Warner Bros. and producers Joel Silver and Akiva Goldsman.
The project that really put Rinsch on the map at studios is The Gift, a short film that he created for electronics company Phillips.
Universal attached Rinsch last year to make his feature directing debut on "47 Ronin," a samurai swordsmen tale that will star Keanu Reeves.
Rinsch pitched his own take on Logan's Run, and the studio will soon hire a big writer to draft a version that is closer to the novel by William F. Nolan and George Clayton Johnson.
The age of the protagonist will be closer to the book, where the protagonist realized he was going to be killed on his 21st birthday and fled. The original movie changed the age to be closer to that of the film's star, Michael York.
No stars have been cast as of yet.
Project, focused on a man trying to escape a mandatory death sentence on his 30th birthday, has been in development at Warner's for more than a decade.
The 1976 original pic, released by MGM and based on a 1967 novel by William F. Nolan and George Clayton Johnson, starred Michael York as a man who tries to outrun cops who kill everyone who reaches 30 to alleviate overpopulation.

Didn't they already do a remake, it was called "The Island" ...
cute. (while not totally accurate. cough, 'Parts: The Clonus Horror'.)

Everyone should watch that short film above, this guy totally captures the feel of what a Logan's remake should have.

Eh I don't know. While perhaps Logan's Run is due for a proper retelling from the book instead of the horrendous tv series, I kind of like the original film just the way it is. It's tough to consider a remake of something that might need a remake on its own merits because there are so many dang reboots, redos, and updates anymore. If Michael York had some sort of cameo, showing that this is more homage rather than slice and dice to the original, I might watch.

Logan's Run is the first DVD I even bought. Does that say something about me or what? ;0)

If this is done right, it will be AWESUM! In a semi related note, going as a Sandman for this year's Dragoncon...

:D

The original looks so tacky now. It almost looks like it was made in the 60s.

I've never been a fan of the book (which I HAVE read). The movie was better. The tv series was well-intentioned, but like a lot of 70s sci-fi tv, just couldn't seem to get any traction.

Mostly true, except for one thing.. Jenny Agutter..
My first crush as young lad...

I think it still stands the test of time despite the clothing and art direction. If they could update the look a bit but keep the story in tact, it could be good. I particularly like the outdoor parts as it looks a bit like Fallout 3. They could perhaps explain what exactly happened and why society lives in bubble cities.

I could not agree more! There was a second book, also very good, but the title escapes me at moment.

Here Here Uncle! Rama I agree it looks tacky, but that's part of its charm. I think there's something to be said for science fiction that can perform with bad, little, or no effects at all. If someone makes a new Logan's Run film trying to be young and looking good and hip forever, well that's kind of missing the point of the original film, isn't it? :0)

After watching Rinsch's short film The Gift, I have fullest confidence that Logan's Run is in the right hands.

I used to watch the TV-series back in the day but never really understood where they were trying to go with it. Once the movie finds it's resolution the guts of the premise seem to have been done...

Logan's World, if I recall correctly.

Logan's Run was crap & deserves a good remake. Simple as that for me (I've read the book, seen the movie and TV show, and am reading the current comic book; out of all four versions, the comic book and novel are better.) I hope that the novel is what will be brought to the big screen this time.

Wasn't the second book extremely tough to come by, or was there a third limited book by one of the co authors? I don't wonder if these stories from the literary Logan's Run universe would make a better movie. That way it can be something totally different and not technically stand in direct comparison to the original.

I just think its ironic that a story where everyone dies at 30 is being remade because to the majority of viewers, the 34 year old film looks too old and crappy. Aren't we supposed to appreciate the old man with the beard? ;0)

Sure the effects are laughable and fun, but I remember being a kid and thinking this was heavy stuff more than what the visuals were like. Michael York is pretty upset when his crystal starts blinking people! The fear that he will die and the irony that he is now the hunted when he was once the badass hunter is enough storytelling for me.

ETA: Here's the wiki for further research. I didn't know Logan's Run was nominated for Art and Decoration Oscars and won several other awards. I always thought it was a nice little cult film. After all, everyone loves a Sandman! ;0)

Yeah, I completely agree. I feel the same way about it. In terms of storytelling, I think it's a pretty interesting concept, and while visually it is outdated, I still think the story itself stands the test of time. So, perhaps they could update the look but keep the story the same, and I'd be Ok with that. The thing is though, I find Sci-Fi in general can date itself very quickly by setting itself distinctly, in that what can look futuristic one decade can really look outdated the next. I mean, just look at TNG. Some of the styles in that can really look outdated while they tried to pin a futuristic style on it. Kind of ironic.
