Logan Lerman top contender for new "Spider-Man"

It seems all but confirmed. 18 year-old actor Logan Lerman, who had been rumored to be a contender for the role of Peter Parker/Spider-Man in the new reboot, is apparently now the top contender and according to HitFix "almost 100% locked" to replace Tobey Maguire as your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man.

Lerman, whose biggest role to date has been in Chris Columbus' fantasy epic Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief which came out earlier this year, beat out actors Anton Yelchin (Star Trek), Jessie Eisenberg (Zombieland), Patrick Fugit (Almost Famous) and Johnny Simmons (Jennifer's Body).

This new iteration of Spider-Man as yet untitled is to be directed by Marc Webb of (500) Days of Summer fame and has been solely written by James Vanderbilt (Zodiac, The Losers). Spider-Man swings into theaters July 3rd, 2012.

Now, I remember first recommending him way before he was even considered. Not that I want to take credit or anything ( ;) ), but I've been a fan of Lerman ever since he played a young George Hamilton in My One and Only. He has looks and talent, plus he fits the appropriate age for a high school Peter Parker.

Yeah, I'd be okay with Lerman. I think he'd do fine. At least we're not getting Michael Cera or Zac Efron.

I just hope this new Spider-Man has more of the sarcastic wit that the Raimi/Maguire iteration kind of lacked.

Blech. I don't like the way they decided to reboot him back to high school unless they were doing a flashback scene.

It would be like Superman movie simply with teenage Clark Kent

I would be quite content with Lerman as well and now that it was mentioned I do remember him from Jack and Bobby as well!

Not really, most of Spidey's stories have taken place when he's been in high school. Why wouldn't they have it taking place in high school? The whole thing is that he's an awkward teenager who gets superpowers. It's nothing like having a Superman movie with only Clark Kent.

Didn't like him at all in "Percy Jackson". I'm not even saying he was particularly bad in it, but something about him just rubbed me the wrong way. Maybe it's the plucked eyebrows. ;)

While I don't really have great alternative (although Anton Yelchin might be good), I don't think Lerman is a very good choice.

Um, no. You are not apparently accounting for his whole publishing history. He hasn't been in H.S. forever. With some near 600 issues just of the Amazing title he was in H.S. for like 1/3 or less. The rest have been in his 20's, even the crappy BND didn't reboot him back to H.S., so no not most of his stories are from H.S.

Spiderman and his Amazing Friends in the 80's had him, that's right in college. Which is why many would be happy with Maguire continuing in the role playing a 20something Peter.

As for Lerman, I've not seen him in anything but he has the look for Paker anyway.

Tobey Maguire is 34, so a bit of a stretch for him to be playing a character that should be in his early 20's. It worked for the first three films (more so the first two), and while I would have loved to have seen him a fourth time, I can understand how going back to high school and getting a younger actor for the character might have been more appeasing.

Or a Star Trek movie with young Kirk and Spock...

Although I think rebooting any movie franchise is mental, if you're rebooting Spidey you have no choice but to have him in High School because that's how the whole thing started out.

What's amazing about Spider-Man is how completely uninterested in the character I am at this point.

I'd have preferred Jesse Eisenberg. But then I'd have preferred another director. I'd also prefer that they didn't try to market Spider-Man to the Twi-hards, but none of this is exactly my choice, is it?

Is he looking his age though? I honestly haven't seen him in anything since Spidey 3. He struck me as youthful looking despite his real age.

Um, but it's not their childhood really. It takes place when Kirk became the famous captain he did and when Spock became his friend.

Spider-Man's life centers around his college and afterward. From what I remember in the reboots, Spider-Man gets his power as a senior in high school. He doesn't have them when he's a freshman.

And Batman started out as a little 8 year old kid.

Cute kid, right looks, but I just recently saw the original Spider-Man on HBO, and I still cannot fathom what was 'wrong' with that version that a remake is needed so soon?
I'd also prefer that they didn't try to market Spider-Man to the Twi-hards
If that is what's motivating all this, make up a new character. We haven't seen a superhero vampire yet, have we? Don't answer that. :rommie:

Yep. We got two amazing movies and a middling third. I'm pretty much done.

Wow, the grudges people can hold!

So now it's 1 strike and you're out? How does anybody enjoy ANYTHING these days by being this difficult to please.

Is that a grudge? Or has the story simply been told and it's time to move on to something else. And why can't we have a story with Peter Parker in his 30s? Does he suddenly become old and boring?

...to the Twi-hards, yes. Ugh. That is what's motivating this.
