Local/National News and Santa Claus

It's partly sweet what parents and others will do to keep the story of Santa Claus as alive and "real" as possible. We operate in an adult world for the most part and us adults know the Truth when it comes to Santa Claus and the pain when you're told it and all of the magic and wonder of the world evaporated in an instant. But we continue this tradition and legend and it's really sort-of cute. The local news will show a "Santa Tracker" during their broadcasts on Christmas Eve's evening news (even though by all logic Santa would his trip at a time to give him the most time to work with and give himself a full day of "night" to work with as nighttime works around the globe) and even NASA gets in on the game by saying they're offering the Vehicle Assembly Building in Florida as a warehouse waypoint for Santa and his trip.

Nevermind the link. Wasn't what I thought it was, I'm looking for one. But the local/national news break on the radio this evening pointed out that Santa will be holding a couple million gifts at the NASA facility for his trip.

Would be cool if there was a partial truth to NASA's side, like housing donation gifts for charities until Christmas Day.

I was 100% certain you were going to be complaining about this and then imagine my shock when you said you liked it!

I like it, too. I think it's very cute.

I remember that the local weather forecasters would be tracking Santa and that is how my parents got me to go to bed on that special night.

Don't think the adults are doing this just for the kids. I think many adults get a kick out of acting out this fantasy even when they know it's not real. It's like there is a glimmer of hope and longing left in them. Of course Santa isn't real...but oh my gosh, what if things like that really were possible? So I think they play along as much for their own benefit as for the children!

Anyone else with Uverse notice the Santa Tracker channel? It has games, music, videos, and other Christmas stuff, but it also has a fake news program that updates Santa's travels today every half hour. It is horribly cheesy but for some reason I am watching it anyway!

Hubby and I were just watching the morning news and they had the Santa Tracker with satellite footage---very cute.

Life is too serious as it is; it's good to have some fun once in awhile.

Yeah, I think it's fun for adults too as I said I find it fun because it gives you that ounce or two of hope for wonder and magic in our mundane world. I remember when I was a kid and being told there was no Santa, in the 4th Grade as I recall (I was also told not to tell other kids) I remember being very upset first of all, second of all confused because I remembered hearing these news/radio reports and then wondering if it made me a Jehovah Witness. But with my niece it's fun to give her that wonder.

The Canadian Post Office has a number of volunteers - mostly retired post office employees, but some current employees as well - who open, read and respond to as many of the letters that are written to Santa as they can. (His mailing address is in Canada, after all. ;) ) There was an article last week that talked about some of the letters which are actually written by adults, and not on behalf of their kids. It was quite a heart-rending article in many ways. Here's a link for anyone who's interested.
