Little Spelling Bastards

manoeuvres. did i even spell it right then?
You did if you're in Europe. On the U.S. side of the Atlantic, it's maneuvers.

Honestly, When I was going to school, way back in the 80's we didn't have any such thing as spell checkers. We had to do it the old fashioned way, we learned. Now I know I'm getting old, when I can say you kids these days have it easy.

Lazy Americans, you can't even be bothered to write the whole word so you drop vowels and move letters around ;)

I often have trouble when writing, like Chris does, with harass and embarrass - how many Rs?

Not at all. Spell checkers are like cruise control -- they can reduce your workload a little so long as you monitor their results, but if you assume they can do it all for you, you're headed for disaster. I've been hearing about cases where reporters careless with their spellcheckers were publishing stories about presidential candidates such as John Moccasin, Mike Hackable, Rude Giuliani, and Barracks Abeam.

I'm actually more worried for the day that future generations will communicate exclusively by saying "lol brb imho ftw." I'll never get it. Then again, I'm the same kind of person who grimaces every time I see "teh". As a typo, it's understandable, but to purposely type it is not cool or hip, it's unoriginaly and monumentaly stupid. It always reminds me of the classic warning about crossing your eyes... Sorry about the rant.

And turn down that crap you call music!!!!

I usually have problem with stationary/stationery myself.

Well, I've just been going over copyedits on Places of Exile, and apparently I still have problems with "indispensable" (I used -ible) and "embarrassing" (I used one R) -- and on one occasion I misspelled one of the alien character names I created! Which isn't the first time I've done that. I should keep lists of character names or something.

Slightly O/T, but was Lynne Truss' work "Eats, Shoots and Leaves" realised over the other side of the pond? I recall reading it here a while back and finding it quite entertaining. She makes a lot valid points about incorrect use of apostrophes and poor usage of the english language in general.

A couple of the most common goofs I see is the word loose for lose and your when you're is meant.

I hate it when people spell my name wrong!
Unfortunately, I was Christened Keith, People still send cards and presents with Kieth written on it!

Currently reading: "Creative Coupling"

next up: Best Destiny

^ I occasionally get that, too. We won't even talk about what's done to "DeCandido"....

Speaking of names that should be easy to spell but people can't seem to do it...

My name is Adrian. But I've seen all of the following:

Andrian << this pops up quite frequently, I have no idea where the extra "n" comes from.
Adrain << This one pisses me off because I'm not "a drain"
Adrien << this is at least "close enough"
Adren << WTF?!!
Adrin << WTF?!! again
Adriane

And of course the various female versions:
Adrienne
Adrianne

What's worse though is people who are reading my name spelled correctly but say "Andre." I'm like: WTF? Moron!
