I don't know what was up with Riker in this episode, he's usually a lot smarter. Maybe the electromagnetic rings from the planet were interfering with his metaphasic brain protein compatibilities.

Yeah I really don't like this episode much, but I have to say the kid they got for Picard was perfect. I found him more believable as Patrick Stewart than Tom Hardy in Nemesis.

I would have liked to have been there in the writers room when someone dropped this episode idea. "How about there's a holodeck accident... no wait a transporter accident, and they end up as kids!"

TNG writers likely suffer from a few things. One is that the general rule was that the crew was suppose to talk their way out of things rather than fight. The whole, humanity has moved beyond violence and such things notion.

Also writters come up with silly/fun ideas that sound good on paper, or at least in the rough outline, but then have to make things really weird to pull them off, or just wing it and hope people are entertained enough not to care about the issues in the plot.
