Damn...some REALLY good ones in there that if I were 100 I would've put on my list!

I'm just gonna do the one-per-year thing.

Numbers don't necessarily indicate the order in which I'm rating the album. Sorry, but I'm hideously OCD and probably would have spent the rest of the night mildly annoyed if I didn't.

Favourite albums of each year, but in most cases there are at least four or five strong contenders from the same year - the hardest to choose was probably 1991, were there are about ten equally strong albums! Some of my 00s choices are a little dubious, as I pay more attention to 80s and 90s albums than current music.

I did it a little differently, I listed my favorite album that was released each year of my life.

I did it this way too, though I had to cheat a bit with the classical music: sometimes I list the disc that I own, and sometimes I list the year a work premiered.

This was an interesting exercise which reminded me of the various types of music I've enjoyed throughout my life. I'd forgotten all about childhood favourites like Goofy Greats and Another Monty Python Record until I got stuck trying to find albums from the 70s.

1968: Anton LaVey, The Satanic Mass
1969: Coven, Witchcraft Destroys Minds and Reaps Souls
1970: George Crumb, Black Angels
1971: Black Sabbath, Master of Reality
1972: Monty Python, Monty Python’s Previous Record
1973: Johnny Cash, The Gospel Road
1974: Leonard Bernstein, Candide (Broadway revival)

I've posted album lists before, so for something different I went with the year-by-year thing, too, with these rules: It had to be new that year, no compilations, reissue or "remastered" versions, and I have to own a copy.

I'm surprised I covered as many years as I did, because as I get older I care less about new music. Some years, especially in the '80s when I was a teenager and soaking up music everywhere I could, were really hard to chose. The results were interesting, with some of my favorite artists missing (Talking Heads, the Kinks, the Who, Richard Thompson, Sly & the Family Stone...), but the competition was fierce...

7.) Warren Zevon-Warren Zevon

Wow, isn't that a great record? That was a tough year for me to chose, with that, Steely Dan's The Royal Scam, The Modern Lovers and Emmylou Harris' Luxury Liner. But I had to go with Ramones.

Some years, especially in the '80s when I was a teenager and soaking up music everywhere I could, were really hard to chose.

I had exactly the same experience. I had to choose between four or five alternatives for the year 1987, for example.

The 70s, by contrast, were tough.

I'm going to try to do it the way Kirby did it. This might be incomplete, but I'll give it my best. A couple of years, I had way too many albums to choose from (1991 and 1994 were good examples of that). Other times, it was hard to pick any (1998 wasn't a great year for music).

1987 - The Joshua Tree (U2)
1988 - Daydream Nation (Sonic Youth)
1989 - Doolittle (Pixies)
1990 - Facelift (Alice in Chains)
1991 - Nevermind (Nirvana)
1992 - Dirt (Alice in Chains)
1993 - Siamese Dream (Smashing Pumpkins)
1994 - Dookie (Green Day)
1995 - Collective Soul (Collective Soul)
1996 - Tiny Music .... Songs From the Vatican Gift Shop (Stone Temple Pilots)
1997 - OK Computer (Radiohead)
1998 - System of a Down (System of a Down)
1999 - The Battle of Los Angeles (Rage Against the Machine)
2000 - The Moon and Antarctica (Modest Mouse)
2001 - White Blood Cells (White Stripes)
2002 - Songs for the Deaf (Queens of the Stone Age)
2003 - Elephant (White Stripes)
2004 - American Idiot (Green Day)
2005 - Out of Exile (Audioslave)
2006 - Black Holes & Revelations (Muse)
2007 - In Rainbows (Radiohead)
2008 - Viva La Vida (Coldplay)
2009 - 21st Century Breakdown

EDIT: Interestingly enough, I have at least one song for every year starting in 1962

It would take me ages to go through all the years and find out what was released when. I'm too old and busted for that.

Me too. In fact, I've put off posting in this thread for precisely that reason - if I was to do that, I'd be here all weekend, figuring out my favorite album of each year...and I'd really miss some of my favorites in the end because the 80's were a gold mine for me, while the late 70's....well....

Anyway, I will list my top 45 albums and leave it at that. But I will agree to make them all albums that were released after I was born and put them in (roughly) chronological order.

I wonder if I'm turning into a foggie? Not a single album from this decade. Although I do have some stuff from this decade in my iTunes - Matchbox 20, Lifehouse, Fuel, Daughtry, 3 Doors Down, Train, The GooGoo Dolls, etc., as well as a bunch of other albums by artists listed in my top 45. But I can't justify putting them into the top 45 yet - not enough time has passed for me to determine if they will age well or not.
