Links To Some Art Related To My Fanfic

USS Triumphant

Vice Admiral
Admiral
I haven't hit 100 posts yet since I signed back up, so these are just links to Imageshack, and I'll explain a little about each as I go. Feel free to play around with anything you see in these - I'm not an artist by any means, and I'm not proprietary at all. For that matter, I'm also pretty sure that I ripped elements of these from other stuff, but that was about 12 years ago, so I'll just say, "partially attributable to an unknown artist."

U.S.S. Enterprise - NCC-170100: This modified Triumphant class ship (built on the same frame replicated to four times the normal class scale at the Dyson Shipyards) is one of the stars of my fanfic, and the testbed for the first starship scale Sidewarp drive. (Sidewarp, without too much detail here, allows very rapid transit through space using something called "triordinal trickery".) The lower decks of the fortress-like structure on top of the secondary hull contain large scale replication equipment tied into the power provided by the inner set of warp nacelles, and assembly areas to construct new small craft. The upper decks contain the quarters for the pilots and construction/repair crew, and forward and rear facing bays for storage and launch of the aforementioned small craft. The keel contains equipment that projects a field to smooth out the subspace wake of the ship, preventing tears in the fabric of subspace as discussed on TNG. (Or something. ;) I just like the keel. If you can suggest a different purpose, I'd be happy to hear it.) Not really visible in the art, but the saucer is separable and warp capable, and the command module contains a regular bridge and a flag bridge, since the Triumphant class is intended in part for fleet flagship use.

U.S.S. Asimov - NCC 170492 - Hawking Class: A science vessel. Sensor pod up top, nacelles swung below - all pretty Miranda-ish, save that keel again.

U.S.S. Aurora - NCC 160001 - Origin Class Farship, Image 1, Image 2: Each ship of the Origin class is intended to essentially act as Starbase One and for whatever galaxy it is sent to, establishing a stable Federation presence and home base for exploration for the starships it carries. These two images contain some diagrams and specifications for the Aurora, typical of the class.

Any thoughts are welcome, but be gentle - as I said, I'm not an artist.

Hard to really tell what they look like from the small images. Guessing this is looong after TNG?

Mid 26th Century. Interesting.

  • Why not just use a Gabriel-Class shuttle-carrier (or two,) instead of the Triumphant-Class & Hawking-Class? It would make sense & not require a lot of over-the-top uber-tech. It allows for small craft construction / repair & would be impressive enough to serve as your flag vessel(s). In addition to the fact your non-canon designs are too big, you'd scare the shit out of anyone these ships came in "First Contact" with. These somewhat over-the-top designs do not say, "We come in peace."

  • Secondly, for the purpose of fan fiction, you wouldn't need mobile headquarters as there have been plenty of instances (such as Voyager's slipstream experience & the pocket books' use of Iconian Gateways, & Voyager's subspace catapult,) where you could send through normal CoE (Corps of Engineers) or Starfleet Diplomatic Corps vessels & set up regular "Nemesis"-style shipyards in a secured location on the other side. If you use the Gabriel-Class shuttle-carrier, you've got the closest thing to "Battlestar Galactica" right there anyway.

  • Or, simply tack-on an alliance with already-established shipyards belonging to authorities already embedded in the location of your choice, allowing you opportunities to begin another arm of the United Federation of Planets or The Alpha Quadrant Alliance.

That design would not fill the intended purpose for either of the other two classes. The Triumphant-Class is intended to fill the heavy cruiser/battleship role, they just have a fighter element attached. The Hawking-Class are science vessels, packed with a lot more sensor equipment than the Gabriel-Class look able to carry. However, that ship looks awesome, much better than the Skywalker-Class carriers (all named after heroic pilot characters from historical fiction - I know, a little silly) that I designed and haven't shown yet. Between the coolness of that design, and the fact that in my story's past the Enterprise-F was commanded by Captain John Gabriel, I am definitely snagging me some of those into my fleet. :techman:

Is that a canon design, or fan work?

I think you'd have that problem with any decent-sized starship - remember how big the E was compared to the Phoenix in ST:FC. A lot of peaceful contact is about attitude (shields and weapons levels) and design (does this ship present weapons in an obvious and aggressive fashion, or display quiet power?). I'd say the Triumphant says, "We come in peace (and you probably wouldn't want it to be otherwise, so be nice)." ;)

True, but first, that's been done, and second, it isn't the point. Part of the point is that even with everything else that is going to hell, there is still a massive effort to continue the original mission of Starfleet, and the Farship Project represents that. (That, and they provide the basis for a major conflict in the stories.)
If you use the Gabriel-Class shuttle-carrier, you've got the closest thing to "Battlestar Galactica" right there anyway.

Not really what I'm going for. My crew isn't lost.

This might clarify some of what I'm going for.

While your replies ring very true, I'd start small (at first.) Wouldn't it be frustrating to continuously lose larger, cumbersome mobile outposts, rather than smaller, easily- retrofitted, modular (non-canon) "observation posts"? Especially during a time of instability, races seceding & a lot of back-biting. The U.F.P. itself in jeopardy, & the A.Q. Alliance on shaky ground. Smaller, easily re-classified measures aren't going to be the same kind of pain in the butt at a time of constant uncertainty about where to shuffle tactical / material resources? I should've included this earlier.
