Linda Hamilton as Kathryn Janeway

Frontier

Vice Admiral
Admiral
So I was on IMDB, and it said Linda Hamilton auditioned for the part of Janeway.

How cool would that have been?

I mean, I love Kate - but it would have brought a bit of star power to the show, and I could certainly see her as Janeway.

I don't know... no offense to Linda but she's not the best actress.

Still, every time she came on screen I would have went 'Sarah Connor' in the Ahnold voice an I would have laughed. And she was a much better choice than Bujold.

I believe Sue Dibney (Leah Brahms) and Erin Gray (of the 70s' 'Buck Rogers') also auditioned for the part. Does anyone know other names?

Personally if I were to pick an actress I'd liked to have seen as Janeway instead of Kate Mulgrew I'd say Lena Heady of Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles. She does a great job of being a believable strong woman and is someone I could definitely see as playing Janeway.

Mulgrew has performed excellenty in the role of captain Janeway, and I don't know who could have done it better...

I don't want even think abaut that...
...Mulgrew is frist (ok, second) and only one... ;)

As much as I love Linda Hamilton as Sarah Connor, and to a lesser extent in Beauty & the Beast - for the most part, her performances aren't that impressive. I just don't see her as Janeway. I think part of that is that Hamilton doesn't seem to make bad writing work - like it has to kick ass before she arrives or it's crap. And one of the things that I treasure about Mulgrew is she can make some of the worst scripts almost watchable. A rare gift.

you're correct about those. one other actress was chelsea field, who coincidentally co-starred with roxann dawson (as roxann biggs) in nightingales and RDM in the masters of the universe movie, and married scott bakula in 1996.

rumor has it that she was an early favorite, but the producers said she was either too young or too young looking (i forget which exactly).

they also auditioned a couple of guys in case they couldn't decide on or liked any of the women, but i forget who.

Linda Hamilton would've been good.

Plus, when the Borg showed up, she's actually had experience fighting ersatz Borg (A.S.'s Terminat:borg:r), unlike Margaret Donner, whose only talent is stealing books from her husband Larry:D

I remember seeing a picture of one of those guys. British, IIRC.

Chelsea Field also has a smoker's voice. I could see her or Sue Dibny pulling it off.

But I prefer Mulgrew.

Weirdly, although it sounds a good idea in theory, I can't quite see it. On the other hand, someone's suggestion of Sigourney Weaver from a couple of weeks ago, even though they play similar characters, would have been really good in my opinion.

Only if the pre-requisite for the Janeway character was shooting every alien she saw with a double barrel shotgun would she have been the right choice!

It would have been cool to have Linda Hamilton or Erin Grey in a Trek series!

Headey now? Maybe. Still a little young to be captain.

Headey when Voyager started was 22 years old. So she probably wasn't going to work as a starship captain.

Here's a short list of actresses that I believe could have worked and brought more to the role than Mulgrew:

Jodie Foster
Sally Field
Carrie Fisher
Candice Bergen
Judi Dench (would have played Janeway a bit older, but as long as it didn't interfere with the great britcom "As Time Goes By", I'd have been for it)
Rita Moreno
Khandi Alexander
Susan Lucci
Jane Curtin
Mary McDonell
Shelley Long
Lorna Patterson
Sela Ward
Sofia Milos
June Chadwick
Jane Badler
Faye Grant
Dana Delany
Lindsay Wagner
Eileen Davidson
Jess Walton
Hunter Tylo
Kim Zimmer
Vanessa Williams

But, I'll say this: Watching the clips of Bujold in the part has certainly given me a new appreciation for Mulgrew - and I wouldn't have thought that possible, really.

Yes, I'm an unapologetic original 'V' tv series fan. And boy, I'll tell you, this has been one loooooong hiatus between seasons. But one day, we'll get word that the new season is about to start. I have faith. :scream:

;)
I'd follow Dana anywhere. But I think if she had been cast as Captain, the dynamic with the crew would have been thrown off it's hinges; they'd have had to recast all the other roles.
Maybe not all, but some. For one thing, there'd have been no need for Seven to have been quite the ... erm ... shape that she was. Which could have led to a more interesting interaction with the Borg.

Imagine, for example, if Annika had been assimilated much more recently, and was still a little girl Borg, selected by The Collective to interact with Voyager to be less threatening and promote cooperation against Species 8472. They's have still freed her, and taken her along.

Now imagine the actress who played Naomi Wildman playing that role. Her Borg knowledge and seriousness would make her much more reasonable as the Captain's "girl Friday" than Naomi was.
