Life would be easier if people were like Star Trek

If I'm talking to someone and they start using technobabble and we aren't drunk at a convention, I'm walking away.

The gears of an advanced civil society are greased by a thousand tiny lies....

Hey! That sounds damn good! Someone write it down! Quick!!:):):)

^ That they are. Many of us wouldn't survive the day if we always said what we meant. I'm not sure I'd reach the office in one piece.

Who's to say that the people in Star Trek don't use small talk and generic phrases to communicate, especially when starting a conversation. I would think that small talk and such is part of human nature at least to a certain extent, and that won't change too much in 200 or 300 years.
Maybe you should join the military, language is much more precise in the military.
Or become a lawyer, they use very precise language.

One of my favorite things about the new Star Trek movie is that they actually talk like real people. Like when Uhura got freaked out by Kirk's hands swelling up, that's a normal reaction to that situation. I never liked how Trek usually has a cold detachment from what's happening around them.

But I still say we should try it.

Abolishing money could be problematic. Women use money to select desirable sexual partners. If we got rid of money, they might resort to physical determinants of status. I don't think anybody on this website wants that to happen.

I think you have it backwards. Having money is the easiest way to feel secure, which is what women look for in life partners. Sexual partners, on the other hand, is really all physical.

I don't mind abolishing money. As soon as we invent matter replicators, that is.

Personally, I would definitively be in favour of that. I am way more handsome than I am affluent. Which speaks extraordinarily well of my looks... or terribly bad of my financial situation. :shifty:

(Well, they didn't create the "struggling young scientist" stereotype from nothing...)

Also I like to wear red and would prefer not to die every time I left the house.

No, it's OK. As long as it's just red trousers or a tie or something, you're still good. :D

Money and Replicators aren't the bottleneck; energy is. Star Trek essentially depicts a society with virtually free energy. If we really had free energy on demand they way they show it on Star Trek, the need for money (or replicators) decreases dramatically.

Hmm. Good point.

Okay, I'll begin work at once. Just as soon as I find somebody with a science degree. Any of you good people have one?

Come on. Partner with me, and if we're successful, we;ll make MILLIONS.

Yeah, except that right after we invent it, the millions suddenly become meaningless. :(

(of course, that's not entirely true; it would take decades for the implications of that free energy to work their way through the world system and if you could control the distribution & operation of the energy source, you would still be in a highly influential position regardless of the exact economic model in existence. There's actually a big push towards fusion research at the moment; it's the only project that I think has the active co-operation of about half the G20 countries, including the US, EU, China, Japan, India, South Korea & Russia. Given the range of political opinions therein, that really says something!).

As you say, not right away they wouldn't. We'd be rich for a little while. And, given how long it might take for the Replicator to "catch-on", we both might be dead by the time the world economy gets around to becoming history.

I just rewatched the Voyager episode 'Future's End'. I take back what I said about changing social patterns to be more like Star Trek ... unless a way can be found to do it without hammy overacting

I didn't find Rain (?) very believable
