Life without chocolate

OK, I know this a facile thread but... I've always had a sweet tooth but for medical reasons have had to stop eating such. No chocolate in last six months. Now I can't say I miss it, but have the (psychological) bitter-sweet memories so even reading about it makes it desirable again.
Could you forego (easily)?
What's the best and worst? (I know US chocolate gets a bad rap, but I loved Butterfingers).
Are you plain, milk or bi?
Weirdest flavors? Used to love: chilli chocolate; ginger; lavender.
Best/max percentage? 70-80% seems to be happy maximum...

I recently became vegan which now limits my choice to some brands of dark chocolate (and weird rice milk chocolate - but that's not very good). Before that, my favourites were Cadbury Dairy Milk, various Milka and Lindt flavours.
Now it's pretty much just Lindt's regular dark chocolate and Ritter Sport dark chocolate filled with marzipan. Oh well, it could be worse.

I like dark chocolate: the darker, the better. My product of choice regarding chocolate is Nero Perugina (70% cocoa). Awesome.

For obvious reasons, I'm also fond of Gianduia chocolate (cocoa and hazelnuts).

I think it's a pity that dark chocolate usually only comes in plain. Except for the above mentioned marzipan filling no one seems to have come up with something a little creative, e.g. dark chocolate with nuts. (Ok, Lindt has some Mousse au Chocolat fillings but they're not vegan.)

I didn't have that much of a taste for it until I got older. I really like the dark stuff: %60-70 cocoa mass, but milk is fine too. Kit Kat Dark is probably the most evolved mass-market confection I've had; it's divine, but Montezuma or Green & Blacks if I want something more "grown-up."

Could I live without it? Sure, but why would I? Having said that I don't keep it in the house; it's an occasional treat.

I do not claim to know whether they are vegan, but several chocolate brands here have Dark Chocolate with Mint or Nuts or Nuts & Fruit. My favorite is Dark Chocolate with Cranberries, Blueberries & Nuts.

I have always loved Dark Chocolate, even when the only kind available was Hershey's Special Dark.:techman:

I've seen mint here, too. Not sure about nuts and fruits (I don't like the fruit part of it, anyway) but definetely no nuts. I only shop at normal stores, though, so it might exist.

Mainstay of mine was Cadbury's Dairy Milk - could eat one of those ridiculously large bars in a single sitting when I was young, loved chocolate nausea - but the best was their Bournville dark - dipping that in coffee and then licking the molten chocolate - Awesome!

I've never really liked chocolate bars as such. They're fine, but uninspiring. The moderately high cocoa Lindt Excellence (85% I think) is OK occasionally. But I reserve my real chocolate appreciation either for good chocolate-based desserts or for individual little pralines or truffles. I have a chocolate shop near me that sells wonderful gourmet-standard little chocolates. They're a bit expensive, but my wardrobe prevents me indulging too often anyway, so it all balances out.

I've had 85% before, but it's a bit too bitter for my tastes. I've tried 99% too, but it was like licking carbon powder.

The 99% is an experience, not a chocolate. It's like dropping a tab of acid, right down to the process of placing that tiny little square of cocoa on the tip on your tongue, and waiting for the magic to happen as it's absorbed.

I like bitter dark chocolate, so used to get 85% and 90% (or was it 95%?) fairly regularly. You'd probably like the 70% if the 85% was only a touch too bitter for you.

Personally, I've left the hard stuff behind these days, and mellowed out with truffles, pralines, etc, instead.

Easter Egg chocolate. There's just something bad about it...
I don't eat chocolate as a rule, but when anything is 70% discount it just jumps in my basket.
Man bought me a gorgeous Baileys Egg for Easter ~ it's still untouched.
He golloped down the dark choc Lindt bunny that I got him and the 'buttons' egg that got left over from the Easter Egg hunt for Son. And then complained that he felt slightly 'queasy' :guffaw:

Slightly going off topic (forgive me lurok) but did anyone else do an Easter Egg hunt for their kids?

Son is 18 and I've down a hunt since time began. This year it was philosophically based.

I've done mathematics, rhyme, algebra and directional (take 4 steps, turn right 180 degrees, take 6 steps... etc.).

What we do for chocolate :guffaw:

I used to like Cadbury's Dairy Milk too. I'm not sure if the British version would be the same flavour as that you get in Germany, as I think it's blended differently in each country to suit national tastes. (The same is true with coffee.) I've always preferred British versions over the European versions.

Anyway, I've been vegan for quite a few years now, and even after all this time, Dairy Milk is possibly the only thing I miss not having.

Dark chocolate doesn't do much for me, sadly. A more satisfying alternative is homemade chocolate cake, with as much cocoa in it as I dare. :p

I've seen plenty of dark chocolate combos but I live in the city ad there are lots of fancy chocolates around. Don't know if any of them are vegan.

I've never met a chocolate i didn't like. I prefer dark chocolate though. But really, love them all! :D

Exactly. I could live without chocolate but it would be a horrible life.

That's a pretty good description.

Yeah, that's my percentage of choice.

I totally lost the taste for chocolate a few years ago. Now I can't eat it even if I wanted to. The thought of it just makes me feel kind of sick to my stomach.

The other day I walked past a big stack of white chocolate chunks in Whole Foods, and the smell, which I have to admit was pleasant, actually gave me a headache.
