And that was to TNG's detriment and probably why TOS is still more remembered by the general public overall.

Okay, I don't want to start a TOS-TNG war here, they're two different beasts, but TNG, despite apparent public memory, is the most successful Star Trek series by almost every metric. It had a completely different approach than TOS or Discovery, or even DS9 or Voyager to an extent, but it was one that was well-received, refreshing, and entertaining (to many).

The ideas promulgated by Picard are not ones seen elsewhere on syndicated television, but needed to be heard. They were not a detriment to TNG, they were key to its success. The later seasons, and especially the movies, when Picard makes less speeches, and you get some jokes at Picard's expense about the speeches, those are considered inferior to TNG's best days.

Lorca isn't the kind to give life lessons, but Burnham seems to be holding that role. We'll see if she can ever get to Picard's level in the public consciousness.

tng was quite popular in it day. while it was on the air and a decade after. but its aged with
time. tos much less so.

. in some ways tos s. 1960's sensabilities give it a exotic futuristic "difference"

I'll even take issue with the above as TOS was in syndication (and still is to this day) for 18 years prior to TNG's premiere in 1987. TOS also spawned an animated series in 1973 and 6 successful feature films (4 prior to TNG's premiere.) TNG managed 4 films, two that were very successful, one that unperformed and one that outright bombed. TOS was still popular enough after that last TNG feature film that it spawned two very successful re-imagined films and a third that unperformed.

TOS also inspired the latest Star Trek return to the small screen - which despite what some would like to think is a success as well, and was renewed for a second season already.

The TOS 'big three' are also still more well know and remembered by the general public as compared to their TNG counterparts.

And remember - WITHOUT the huge commercial success of TOS in syndication and the four feature films that had been released up to 1987 - there would have been no TNG series.

So, TNG more successful than TOS - sorry, no, just no - that's just not the case.

Klingon Lessons:
Don't turn your back on a crippled federation ship

Feed your guards lest they feed on you

We come in peace means "You can have this peace or you can have this torpedo"

Burnham Lessons:
Starfleet would rather see death and destruction than to take lessons from it's (seemingly) most diplomatically experienced member world.

It doesn't matter your rank if you do can do everyone's job. (she is literally doing point on every mission)

Parents sometimes give bad advice and aren't superheroes.

Saru Lessons:
It doesn't matter your rank if your captain doesn't like you.

Everyone is one conversation or emotion away from treason.

Burnham is not to be underestimated (as she first boarded Shenzou as a Vulcan expeditionary force reject and ended up bypassing him to first officer in under 7 years before boarding discovery as a prisoner before earning a bridge science role and Lorca's ear in under a month)


Lorca lessons:
Winning will please most of the people some of the time, good sex will handle the rest.

If you take a great captain's (Georgio) crew and inspire them, they will continue to do great things.They will also do the stuff you "don't care, still don't care about with enthusiasm

Good people can be found in prison.
