LGBT Characters in Trek (Help and no flames Please)

Brad Harrison and Noah Mannick are the couple among the Voyager crew from Pathways.

Also, Yoshi Mishima from the Starfleet Academy comics was the subject of hostility from an alien because of his 'romantic involvement' with another male.

In Jeri Taylor's Pathways Harry Kim's academy roommate (whose name escapes me) was gay.

Yeah. His name was George and he's on my list. I don't remember a last name; does anyone have any more info on him?

Thanks for contributing LightningStorm. :)

Dude. Thank You (and excuse my use of the word Dude. lol) The names of the Voyager guys were driving me crazy!!!

I'm not familiar with the comics characters at all, so that's a big help!

I seem to recall(dimly, and I'm open to correction)that Prynn Tenmei briefly considered "chatting up"one of her female Academy classmates when she was having little sucess with the males.

Maybe I just dreamed that...I'm not at home and can't remember the book(DS9r) in question.

I can't remember. It does sound like something she might have said in jest. But I've been awake far too long. I'm going to bed. lol

Thanks for sharing your possibly dreamed up Prynn moment, flandry84.

I also included a relationship between Krissten Richter and Etana Kol in my Mission: Gamma novel, Twilight. I think I introduced the relationship, and perhaps one of the two characters, though if I recall correctly, that relationship had been crafted for a subsequent novel; it just made dramatic sense for the romance to be shown at an earlier time in the story arc.

Sorry David - Mike and I introduced the characters first in our Marvel Comics DS9 series, then transported them over via Marco to the Mission Gamma series. You wrote them first in the MG books, but they were our characters, and part of the original bible for MG. :bolian:
I didn't recall about the comics, but I did note that I only introduced the relationship in the books, and that others had created it. I wasn't trying to take credit for your and Mike's creations, only attempting to help Jason.

^And while Andy & Mike created and introduced Richter and Etana in the comics, I'm fairly certain that the comics never got around to establishing their relationship before the series was cancelled. In fact, I don't think Richter got more than one passing mention in one issue. So in terms of what's actually in print, their relationship was indeed introduced in Twilight.

I understand that there was a gay Cardassian mentioned in the Sacred Chalice story in the MU shards and shadows anthology. He was the son of a Gul I believe.

We know from the series that Bolians have multiple marriages, but I can't recall if the fiction has ever determined whether members of the same sex in those marriages (co-husbands and co-wives) are sexually active together.

Fictitiously yours, Trent Roman

Star Trek: The New Voyages 2: The Procrustean Petard

Kirk, McCoy, Uhura, Laura Breen (redshirt), Brad Collins (redshirt), and other people (including Klingons) involuntarily switch genders (their size and musculature also change). Spock and Kang have their chromosomes changed to XYY, becoming even more masculine.

In the end, Breen volunteers to go through the conversion process again, not to become female, but to become super-masculine:

"There is a better idea for you, Mr. Spock," Breen broke in. "The Doctor can tell you who is the strongest male changee, and so can I. I am. I volunteer. I do not mind remaining a man. In fact, I prefer it." She looked at Kirk rather wistfully. "Any reason I might have to change back--would not work out. And if I'm to be a man, I'd as soon be one in spades, doubled and redoubled."

After the second conversion (presumably to XYY), Breen ends up 6-foot-5. :)

It's also implied that Collins remained converted because of a relationship with Breen, but it's left ambiguous.

Spock (and possibly Kang too) remained XYY permanently.

^OMG, that sounds like a fucking stupid story.

RE: IKS Gorkon, IIRC, it's in Book 3 'Enemy Territory', and only mentioned in passing by the security chief to prove his omniscience. ah...just checked and jammily found the page at the first go, Moq and Yojagh. Moq is married. both are bekks. page 249 and page 250.

It was poorly written. Much of it revolved around the fact that women were never promoted to Captain, as they wouldn't be taken seriously.

"Don't go noble on us, Mr. Spock," Uhura said. "A perfectly 'logical' offer. Why shouldn't she want to remain a man? It's better for her chosen work. She might even want to command some day."

Kirk winced, and he rather thought that the Admiral did, too. "That battle will still have to be fought."

I believe in DS9 Mission Gamma: Cathedral that we revealed that Ro Laren had previously had both male and female lovers.
IIRC, that wasn't in MG but in Abyss. She mentioned (in internal dialogue) a list of past lovers, and one of them was called Dana. Which may be a woman, but not necessarily.

No, that definitely happened. But then her attraction to Shar, who is not entirely male, shows that she's open-minded about such things.

* The one someone was thinking about from Tales from the Captain's Table is from DRG3's "Iron and Sacrifice," where one of Captain Sulu's ancestors was a gay male couple.

* There's also Ensign Stadi, the quickly-killed Voyager helm officer from "Caretaker," who was established (either in the Caretaker novelization or in KRAD's Brave & the Bold, I forget which) as having lesbian parents.

* And there was the lesbian Klingon in Taking Wing who felt up Christine Vale's ass (onboard, as I never cease to be amused by, a ship called the Vaj).

* I seem to vaguely remember (from Section 31: Rogue) a brief passing mention of an ex-boyfriend of Hawk's, previous to Keru.

I understand that there was a gay Cardassian mentioned in the Sacred Chalice story in the MU shards and shadows anthology. He was the son of a Gul I believe.

Andrul, son of Gul Taqut. His father took him to the Sacred Chalice brothel to make a man of him, but Lwaxana Troi (the madam) sensed his true interest and sent him off with Deanna -- who, instead of sleeping with him as Taqut was led to assume, escorted him to a room occupied by two burly Terran men (unnamed).

I'd just like to point out that in including alien species with different sexual paradigms, such as the four-sexed Andorians, it's probably important not to equate them with Human sexual orientations.

Ensign Loolooa Tereshini is a bisexual xenolinguist on Titan. She appears in Sword of Damocles.

Since we're speaking about an alien, this requires clarification: do you mean "bisexual" in the behavioral sense or the anatomical sense?

Hm. I don't think we've been given a canon description of Antaran anatomy. I assumed two genders for the species which is the default for Star Trek.

She's just finished a relationship with a male and is attempting to start one with a female. I envisioned her culture as having no taboos in this area so, by our standard, she's bisexual.

Unlike, say, Burgoyne who is an hermaphrodite.

Concerning the Titan character Bowan Radowski, was it just me or was it implied that Radowski was interested in Keru? I remember reading something about a look between them but it has yet to be followed up on. And actually, I don't think the character has appeared since the first 2 Titan novels, though I could be wrong.

It hasn't been made overt, but it's safe to assume that Radowski is attracted to other men -- perhaps exclusively, perhaps not.

Well, Radowski's story was supposed to be part of a "future" Titan project from Mike and I, but it has yet to materialize. Perhaps if I do some comics for IDW it can happen.

Meanwhile, Keru ("he") does hook up with someone unnamed ("him") at the end of Sword of Damocles.

BTW, both bartender Scot Bishop-Walker and security officer Shelly Hutchison are named after real people, both of whom are gay, though I don't believe either of them has had their orientation covered in the books.

Two of Khan's male followers are married in TO REIGN IN HELL. I can't recall their names anymore, but the camp's primary physician is gay.

True to a point.
There were two specific examples of it that were "thwarted".

The first was when a word balloon was placed over them holding hands while walking through the Promenade. Though I just looked back at the page (issue #10 double-page spread) and notice that the artist didn't draw them holding hands as told. But Etana is still blocked by Odo's word balloon (and Krissten is drawn hideously). You do see Quark checking out Etana's butt though (even if she's hidden by the balloon), so he paid attention to SOME of our scene instructions.

In issue #11, Nog makes a comment to Etana about her "mate." I believe it was originally a bit more clear, but perhaps was changed in editing.

The second was when an artist failed to draw one of them into the scene properly (although instructed to) in a way that would have made things clear. This would have been the sickbay scene at the end of issue #15.

When the DS9 relaunch and Mission Gamma were underway, we talked to Marco early on about bringing the characters into the books. It was to be clear that they were a couple, and put into the "bible" and plots; it just happened that they were written by David before they were written by Mike and I.

So on a technicality, due to artistic interference, the specifics of their relationship WERE first revealed by David. And we are grateful for that, and he (and others) have written them well. But we did create and introduce the characters, and originally wrote their relationship into the comics (issues #10, 11 and 15). Hope that helps to clear things up.
