Levar Burton aka Geordi La Forge criticizes Star Trek 2009

You mean subjectively speaking. I have yet to see objective criteria for evaluating a movie or any other kind of art, popular or otherwise. ;)

Pffft. I came up with such a criteria while in the bath this morning.

That is to say, YOUR criteria. Hence, it is subjective

This thread has 337 posts, 23 pages AND OVER 9000!!!! views. How did it go from Levar Burton talking about JJ killing Prime Trek timeline, to how many film school graduates on this board? I thought the debate on whether St 09 was really Trek or not was resolved 4 years ago. We are 2 months away from the next movie and the haters are still there. Why can't we give love one more chance?

You don't bring me flowers,
You don't sing me love songs,
You don't watch Star Trek with me anymore
At the end of the day...

The characters in Abrams Trek are very broad but that's just his approach. Everything is louder, including the characterisation.

I have a dream that one day Star Trek in film will be a science-fiction series about exploring the unknown or the human condition. Catering to the lowest common denominator with a vengeful villain in a fucking black trenchcoat going on a rampage is less my kinda thing. It's treating the audience like they're stupid. Which the target audience is, but I'd like Trek to aim higher.

The opening of the film sounds more like Star Trek than anything in the rest of the movie.

So you're hoping that someone will produce a Star Trek movie that will not make any money.

That's a lot of dissertations!

I got an A for mine .

I really like The Motion Picture and Wrath of Khan, those made a lot of money. First Contact was the last Star Trek movie to be a good film (Though I enjoy Insurrection!) and that was also a financial hit. I also really liked Prometheus last year and that was a blockbuster success. There's still an audience for ideas driven sci-fi it seems, as Looper and Inception also did very well.

Who gives a shit who's got a whatsitz degree? The convenience stores where I live are staffed by English majors, anthropology students and film school graduates.

Credentials do not impress. Experience does.

Man, everyone's real prickly about it. I only mentioned it to counter the idea that disliking ST09 was some kind of 'film school graduate' thing.

Don't take it personal. You seem not to take this too seriously, which is how it should be. :techman:

Three people have self-identified as film school grads in this forum. Two have been very critical of the film. One has not. That one has fewer posts expressing an opinion on the film. Ergo…

Oh, absolutely. I mean you've no idea the contempt I would feel for someone who was impressed by the phrase 'film school graduate'.

Well I did only get here last month. Give me a few years and I'll be right up there (pro-Abrams, too). ;)

I like "The Three Stooges". They make me laugh. Yes, I know it's a spamish post, but I just felt it needed to be said in the moment. :)

Nobody came up with "a criteria", in the bath or anywhere else. You either came up with a criterion, or you came up with several criteria.

Have you seen a pet ant? I seem to have lost a pet ant around here. Do you know of any pet ants that are in this thread?

Oh well, it may be in another thread somewhere. I'll keep looking. If you see any pet ants around, just let me know, so I can take them back to their pet ant tree.

I think we can all agree that a lot of people are a little hostile to ST 09 even Will Shatner and perhaps Levar Burton. They just have a subtle way of saying it.
