Let's Talk About Outerwear

I hate wearing coats but Chicago winters aren't friendly so I finally bought my first winter coat (since I was a kid anyway) last year. I usually only wear it if I'm gonna be outside for long periods of time.

Otherwise I stick with hoodies, preferably zip up but I'm fine with pullover. I have one fleece that I use for work since it gets pretty cold when I work box office at my theater.

Ugh, buying coats is always a struggle for me. The shoulders are always too wide, the arms are always too long and as a result it's the one item of clothing where I really need to buy in petite sizes, and they can be either very hard or very expensive to come by.

I think I've said it before, but you have a really fantastic figure for proper overcoats, though I can see why you're having trouble finding ones that suit you in most shops.

But I think closely-tailored overcoats really flatter girls with slim figures, good leg length relative to their torso and narrow waists, and you have all those attributes in spades.

Try looking for ones with set-in sleeves rather than raglan shoulders to build up some structure, and then tailored/figure-hugging cuts with plenty of waist suppression, or even double-breasted military-inspired numbers. Don't worry about sleeve length if it's too long; that's a dead cheap & common alteration to shorten.

I don't know what many of those words mean. :vulcan: I think I'm not patient enough to be a good shopper anyway.

They probably need to be cut quite short (above or just grazing below knee) given your height. Though if the top half/waist is tight enough, you could go for full-length. Just not mid-calf, probably, unless the fit is really perfect.

Good luck!

Oh, I would never wear anything that hits mid-calf.

I go this one:

It fits pretty well, actually. Juniors section. :techman:

[lots of flannel & tailoring twaddle]

I don't know what many of those words mean. :vulcan: I think I'm not patient enough to be a good shopper anyway.

There are two easy and not necessarily mutually exclusive solutions to this problem:

a) go custom
b) hire me as your shopper

I'd be just wonderfully good at spending other people's money, I know it... ;)

I like the pattern of the cloth a lot. Plaid is great. Yours isn't a plaid exactly but it echoes some of that effect quite nicely.

Hooray for jacket season!

Though it's already 3-4 yrs old by now, I absolutely love wearing my LRG Varsity jacket (brown-cream colorway) Here's a pic of me stuffing my face with taco-truck taco meat while wearing it:

It's a light jacket, so it's useless in the snow, but I like the details on the collar and cuffs, the colors and stitching. :-D
