Let's talk about Discovery's music

Credit where due - this season has had some of the best music featured in a ST series, ever, IMO.

I don't know if Jeff Russo is scoring every episode, but if he is - kudos to him. He's created some very nice themes which enhance the atmosphere and tension on the show.

The Imperial theme and its variants is standout work:

Say what you will about the scene itself, but the music here is spectacular.

I'd highly recommend taking a listen to his Season 1 OST. There are some gems on there.

The fact I don't get distracted by it is a good sign. Don't get me wrong, I loved Jerry Goldsmith's themes but we must all move on..... and as for James Horner... before he died I loved to chuckle at google's autocomplete when you put his name in. So true. As a music buff I do pay attention, to the extent that an entire scene from Avatar was spoilt for me, knowing it was a Horner score, being familiar with the themes from TWOK and what was inevitably coming despite Cameron's attempt to surprise us.

BSG and DIS have both given welcome attention to up and coming composers.

Why? The one unifying thing about all great music is it's timeless. And there are plenty of timeless offerings throughout all 13 films.

So, while I'll agree it's probably the best on average - and certainly much more palatable than McChatthy horns - I think there's plenty of superior cues can be found throughout ENT, especially in its later two seasons. And there's nothing here that will ever become the pop-culture hacky sack the Amok theme is.

I don't notice it much except the dark theme sounds a lot like Kylo Ren's every time I hear it.

The opening and closing credits are pretty cool. I actually don't really notice it during the show.

I like the intro. I like some of the music in the show... but I think the best music in TV Trek is TOS and the first four seasons of TNG.

After Ron Jones was fired, music that stood out has been the exception, not the rule.

It's really dull music, deeply disappointing. The soundtrack album nearly put me to sleep. Where are the tunes? The interesting orchestrations? The woodwinds? I miss Ron Jones.

For me, the score has been neither terrible or amazing. It does its job, and I'm okay with that.

This might have been said before, but the intro music always reminds me of the opening theme for Fringe.

Either way, I like it.

While I agree music on TNG definitely took a downward spiral, and indeed much of the franchise is really lacking in the episodic music department. In Voyager's last few seasons they did get some pretty decent music in their action scenes, though admittedly this suffered a bit from overuse. Enterprise, while not exactly memorable, its music did tend to be somewhat livelier than the single bland note that characterized much of the episodic music during Berman's reign.

this has been sort of a dormant topic, but chapter 2 is out. anyone listened yet?

standout for me "war is over" which features interesting electronics, a really lovely piano, and a triumphant fanfare. probably the best piece of music in the series, with the kind of personality i'd like to see more of going forward. rest of the album is pretty mediocre unfortunately.
