Like it or not, they are responsible for Trek's success last weekend.

I know we like to snicker at them because they don't know the difference between a warp core and an apple core, but they, not us, the nitpicky minority, made Trek's success possible.

Let's face it, science fiction is a niche genre. And individual 'verses (Trek, Star Wars, B5, BSG, etc) are niches among niches. For any sci-fi to succeed on any level is a victory for us. So giving the mainstream audience is due in my opinion.

Mainstream Audience, I know you don't come here, but if you just happen to be misdirected to this site, know this: We may collect the toys, the comics, the calenders, and the Hallmark ornaments, but it's YOU who made Star Trek the success it was and I hope you join us geeks this weekend to continue its success. This victory belongs to you, even if you don't know the difference between a Jefferies Tube and PVC tube. Thank you.:)

Indeed. I have seen the movie with 4 "mainstreamers" so far, and they all liked it with the lowest vote being, "It was ok." I am planning on seeing it with at least 4 more mainstreamers within the next week or two.

Well said. I think we as fans probably never would have imagined Star Trek being this successful. Nearly $80 million opening weekend? Fans would have scoffed at the idea just years ago. I think it's immensely cool that Star Trek is cool again.

I think there are a LOT of people in their 30s, 40s, and 50s, who are and always have been mildly interested in trek, who have occasionally watched an episode or two from the various series, and who have seen at least a few of the past trek films. The fandom bubbles beneath the surface. And yes, they are hugely responsible for the success (or failure) of the franchise. They'll come to a trek movie if they hear it's good but will stay away if they hear it's bad.

So yes: Cheers to the casual fan who appreciates good quality and will support our cherished franchise when it hits a home run like Abrams et al. just did.

Yeah, I love hearing people say, "I saw the Star Trek movie. It was great. Of course, I'm not a Trekkie or anything..." lol

That brings the debate about denomination backs.

Star Trek fans enjoyed the movies and the series ONCE, no more.
Trekkies actually owned all movies and series and have watched them enough to quote lines
Trekkers are fluent in Klingon... Both dialects...

I think Star Trek has been pretty cool/popular for most of its existence. It wouldn't have kept going for so long if it weren't. It's just amazing what incompetent people can do to a franchise (e.g. Voyager and Enterprise).

Lets see if we can survive the wait till they make a sequel without killing each other.

A series would be cool but I don't think that is in the cards. It would have to be a good new plotline for it to work. I think they have used them all up. If not I would be pleasantly suprised.
