Let's face it, Shatner sucks.

Randor

Lieutenant Commander
let's be honest with ourselves, I've not seen the movie yet (see the t-minus thread)

but William Shatner was NEVER a great actor. he was hamming itup and now with Denny Crane is nothing but a parody of himself. I don't think he has the chops these days to have come back as Kirk. Nimoy can do it, Nimoy's not of this world and is one of the most gifted talents the world has ever known.

I just think Shatner would've been a mistake...

Excuse me, Randor, but was this really needed?

There are a lot of actors who can have holes shot thru even their best performances.

There's no need for you to inflame the negative feelings of certain fans.

Shatner was fine as an actor, no better or worse than many, but the movie can be a success without him...

And likely will be.

Let it go.

I don't think anyone ever deluded themselves that Kirk's charm was in Shatner's acting...

And I doubt his lack of talent would prevent a return as Kirk. Studios don't care if their actors can actually act, they care if they can draw an audience.

The only thing stopping Shaner is his ego...and unfortunately, I don't see that going away. ;)

ummm... no.

sure, Shatner isn't Orson Welles, but he made Kirk a cultural icon and had a certain sort of attitude that he imparted to all his roles. Lately he's drifted into self-parody (which he was comfortable with as far back as Airplane II), but he's always a pleasure to see on screen.

Liking this new film and agreeing that Shatner's inclusion would have been bad don't imply that Shatner's not a gifted actor and responsible for bringing life to a great role.

How long will this thread last?

Uh...Tits!

Shatner has real limitations, some of which are mentioned in the OP. To say he "sucks" is just wildly exaggerated and misses the point entirely. No one gets as much work as he does for as long as he has unless people find him very entertaining.

I don't know his acting ability, but Star Trek V sucked like an Orion Slave girl at a Ferenegi convention

The other actors from the Original Series thought Shatner sucked too. I have read several biographies and stories about him, which all agreed that he was somewhat of a pompous ass who thought himself as the "star" of the show, instead of an essemble piece. According to a book written by Nichelle Nichols, Shatner was even rude and condesending to Ricardo Montleban in Star Trek II, for reasons unknown. According to the book, Shatner went to Nichelle Nichols house because he was writing a book and wanted some input with her, and over the course of the conversation actually asked her why he was so disliked, because he did not have a clue.

Shatner is (or was ) the essence of "our" Kirk. Hopefully Pine and crew will come to embody our characters for the next generation.

He did not "suck" anymore than the rest of the cast at acting.

Nimoy? One of the most gifted talents the world has known? I don't know about that. Again, I liked him in Trek. The few other things I saw him in....he's just an actor. Definitely not oscar worthy. The same for Shatner and crew.

With credits like: "Homeboys in Outer Space" (Doohan),

"Rick & Steve: The Happiest Gay Couple in All The World (Takei),

"Mad Cowgirl" (Koenig). And all the voice over work for cartoons make them big contenders. None of our crew are outstanding in their field. They were and are essentially, the Star Trek characters they created.

This is another one of those semi-rare moment's when I totally agree with Dennis...
:techman:

There's no where to go with this but into the proverbial sewer...

Getting high and marveling at Shatner's over-acting is one of the best things about the original series. TOS wouldn't be as good without him (not saying that the new movie series, with a better or less corny actor in the role, can't be as good as TOS). We wouldn't have had the slang term kirkin' out without him, which was widely used in the urban community, at least in the Washington Metropolitan area where I grew up in the 90s, though I'm not living there now and don't know if it's still popular. All hail the Shat and his riveting acting!!!
