Let's examine ED-209

^ Because whoever you're selling them to, doesn't KNOW they don't work until the sale is already complete....

At which point, the unhappy customer cancels the remainder of the order, sues your company, etc.

But, as others have noted, the film was a satire, not a serious examination of business law or economics.

I would say one problem with saying ED209 has limited functionality is that the model we're shown appears to be a prototype rather than a finished model.

Unless you're OCP, in which case your army of lawyers will always win.

If they have an army of lawyers that always win why bother to be in the tech business at all? Just start a legal services corporation.

While they didn't know it then, current America has the "War on Terror" which extends way beyond "traditional" wars, and includes lots of rights violations.

I live on the South Side of Chicago, and we and the west side get treated a WHOLE lot different than the Near North & Downtown areas. If there were even potholes there, they'd get a news story, community and it'd get fixed right away. And all the news for their restaurants & such. Meanwhile, the rest of us suffer government & economic neglect.

"future" Detroit has similar economic depression, where few people will stand up for the rights of citizens, and those that do often get ignored.

The ED-209 would wipe out some of the gangs (considered "terrorists"), scare the others, sell a few toys, and then get sold to the military. (That was the REAL goal of the ED-209). The innocent people killed will be "unimportant" people (i.e. those without money/power), so those deaths could be hidden/downplayed.

Some will work well...those that don't would need the repair & maintainece. The Military (& govenrment who voted for it) would be too embarassed to say they wasted XX billions of dollars, and spend more to fix the problem, and spin it to justify the extra cost.

The new film version has a little War of the Worlds tripod look to it--even with two legs.

I think ED-209 was also a jibe at the old Sargent York combat vehicle

^The ED-209s in the new film also make more sense because they operate in conjunction with the more humanoid EM-208s, which would have the restraint capabilities the 209s lack.

Of course, the difference is that the original film's ED was there to be a bad idea, a prototype that didn't actually work and got rejected, while the new film's EDs are working combat units. So it makes sense there'd be a difference in functionality/practicality.
