My god, what a stunning film.

On it's surface, it's about a 12 year old boy who befriends a vampire.

Sound a little silly? Screw it-

it's a dark, complex, beautifully made film that will also happen to absolutely shock you.

Don't believe me? Check out the reviews: http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/lat_den_ratte_komma_in/

[Rant: It's being remade into an American version by Matt Reeves (Cloverfield) for a 2010 release. WHY? The film is perfect the way it is. We don't need a goddamned English version.]

Seriously, check it out. It's probably the best vampire film of the past three decades, and it's one of the best films of the year (Best Foreign Language Film Oscar?)

I heard a review that got me wanting to see it, but it came and went from Indianapolis so fast I missed a chance to see it. I'll have to wait for DVD.

Yeah it's a good and imaginative flick. Recommended.

I watched some of the film but fell asleep while watching the subtitles. I'll have to check it out again... maybe tonight.

I saw it in the theater so I supported the film financially ;)

Great film. It's more of a drama about isolation and loneliness with vampirism as a framing device. It still has some good horror elements but it's not a horror film per se.

It's very emotionally complex. It has romantic elements but it's more about finding someone who can take away the heartache by just being there. It's not about sexuality or passion.

Fantastic film but if you go in expecting to compare it to another vampire story you may be disappointed. It's got more in common with Heathers or Heavenly Creatures but even that is off the mark.

I thought there was an interesting subtext to the movie... where the kid, is basically fated to be the next caretaker. (wording that vaguely for benefit of those who havent seen it)

Good point. He seemed to be the next Renfield. I want to read the novel it's based on. I heard it fleshes out backstories and is far more gruesome.

Wasn't there a law passed that says any foreign language horror film that gets even a passing mention on any English language genre website must be remade?

Yeah, that was definitely apparent to me too -

Eli is apparently more than 200 years old ("I've been 12 for a long time..." ... it alludes to her general age in the Novel, apparently) - so you can imagine the caretaker having been with her since he was a child, much like Oskar.

The ending is even more dark if that's the case - look at the fate the caretaker suffered in the end.

Eli seemed to me to be stuck emotionally as a 12 year old as well as physically. She wasn't like Kirsten Dunst in Interview... She was unaware of the passage of time. There was something very sad about that. It was Peter Pan but tragic and lonely.

I could see her repeating this where she befriends kids over an over.

I do recommend the book. The movie and the book are pretty close, but the book does have more characters and fleshes out a lot of things in the movie. The writer of the book (John Ajvide Lindqvist) is the one that made the script for the movie adaption, and he did a great job, although the book is (of course) better.

His next book (Hanteringen av Odöda - "Handling the Undead") should be available in English in 2009, as I understand it. Hopefully, you will se Pappersväggar ("Paper Walls", his short story collection) and Människohamn ("Harbour of Men", "Guise/Shape of Men" or whatever it should be called) too in the future.

After reading the reviews and synopsis, I really want to see this film. Hopefully I don't have to wait too long for the DVD to be available.

Pulled this thread from the grave, because this film is available on DVD. Just watched it. The "go see it part" is solid advice.

A remake would likely be a mistake. It is as well made a vampire film as I've seen. And as importantly it couldn't have been filmed in a better place; cold, isolated, bleak and an environment where the weather itself makes one vulnerable. You had large gray structures imposing above and hemming the characters in; yet were able to give it a small isolated feel where vampire killings could take place without too much outside interference. Uniquely Northern European.
