Les Misérables

I can't speak to the book, but Les Misérables the musical is one of the most pretentious pieces of musical theatre ever composed -- surpased, if by anything, only by Miss Saigon, by the same composers.

The book is excellent; I've read it several times. The movie from a few years ago with Liam was pretty good also.

The book is OK, but the show is awful.

I love the irony, though, of the rich elite paying top dollar to see a musical about the poor.

I openly shoot to kill when I hear it referred to as "Lay Mizzz!!"

What? I speaka da French fluently, and both myself and my Quebec girlfriend pronounce it "Lay Miz"....

Excellent book. With "Hunchback of Notre Dame" , Les Miserables is one of Victor Hugo's best work.

Les Miserables is such an influential story of revenge and relentless pursuit that at least two television shows lifted the idea of a indefatigable investigator bent on "getting his man": the original "The Fugitive" with David Jansen as Richard Kimble and Barry Morse as Lieutenant Gerard, and "The Incredible Hulk" TV show with Bill Bixby as Dr. Banner and Jack Colvin as investigative reporter Jack McGee.

Me too, and I also speak French (mostly). In music circles, we refer to it as "Les Mis" also, so nothing wrong with that.

I loved the book, but I must admit to doing my share of skimming. When Hugo stuck to the story, it was rivetting. However, it did tend to get a bit dragged out in spots and often went way off the topic. For example, it took over 80 pages just to say the priest was a nice man who helped people. There were about 20 pages just describing the Paris sewer system. More background on the Crimean War than I ever need to know. But other than that, it was a great book.
