“So you really liked the Arkham games, huh? Liked wearing any Batsuit you wanted, driving any Batmobile. And Rocksteady won’t give you another.

Okay. We’ll give you ALL of Batman. All 85+ years, all the comics/TV/Movies/games, all the Greatest Hits. And we’ll adapt the Arkham gameplay to LEGO form.

So… wanna get nuts?”

I like the idea in principle, however my worry is that lego games have become bloated open worlds with little interesting beyond the main story. That was my main problem with the DC Supervillains game which had both Gotham and Metropolis, making you travel large distances with poor traversal and annoying prerequisites for unlocking characters. The open worlds they build just aren't interesting enough to interact with.

From what people who got to try it out are saying, this open world dwarfs the one in Arkham Knight. They only got to explore about 10% or so of it, and that was comparable to the full map of that game. As for what they can fill it with, and how interesting... only time will tell.

EDIT: Also, they're sticking to just seven playable characters (at least for now): Batman (with 100 unlockable Batsuits), Commissioner Gordon, Robin (How many? is the question), Catwoman, Batgirl, Nightwing and... Talia al Ghul?? So I guess the only prerequisite for unlocking them is to encounter them over the course of Batman's life and win them over to your side.

And they're definitely getting the main story right, if this video is any indication: An origin told before in many ways, and this version is both none and all of them at the same time...

Well, that's all well and good, but I find the size of a world is only as interesting as what they fill it with and how well it's designed. A well-designed world can tell its own story through the details they've put in. The DC Supervillains game just didn't feel worth exploring to me once I'd played through the main story because the world itself didn't feel like it had much personality. I think random events would help make things more interesting and more diverse.

I love that they put in the comic book / 1966 Batman visual sound effects!
