osted on 19 November 2008 by Robert Seidman Update: Sorry LoTS fans, it looks like I cheated you out of the 5.88 million the two hour premiere really got during the week ending November 2 — and that certainly beat everything on the CW. Nielsen labeled the show weirdly (it didn’t label the show, by, you know, it’s name!) in the spreadsheet, so I deferred to others in the media who had made the same mistake I was making anyway. Still, even the third episode beat almost everything on the CW.
Bill is not always inspired to be as curious about certain numbers and shows as I am, but I’m not always inspired to actually look at ALL the numbers to see if there’s anything worth actually being curious about either. Shame on us!
Thank goodness we have commenters like Chris S, who chimed in with a comment on the weekly syndication rankings and inspired me to be curious:
Funny how syndication is nearly a dead medium for first run scripted programming yet Legend of the Seeker managed to outperform everything on the CW (except for Smallville) in the Live+SD for the week. Hopefully it can maintain near this number week to week.

Legend of the Seeker is the first, first-run scripted series in syndication since we started this blog, and since 2002’s She Spies. The third episode of LoTS averaged 4.31 million when it aired Saturday and Sunday 11/8 & 11/9. The number is the cumulative average of the premiere airing, regardless of when and where it aired across the country. The premiere on 11/2 & 11/2 averaged 5.88 million.
Chris is absolutely right, that # eclipses everything on the CW for the week of November 3-9 other than Smallville. But then again, those numbers are better than recent performance of even SciFi’s Battlestar Galactica too, so we’re not picking on Gossip Girl.
Can LOTS keep it up? That is the question. Please note: some people seem to think LOTS is a CW show because it airs on the CW affiliate in their local markets. It’s not a CW show, it’s syndicated by Disney/ABC and in many markets does not air on the CW.
 
Well there are definite benefits to first run syndication, especially since its become such a sparse way of distributing original run shows.

Cable typically manages 70% penetration. So that leaves 30% of the nation without the option of watching.

the CW reaches near 80%, that leaves 20% of the market unreachable. Though in fairness that 80% of the CW includes several cities that are only viewable through HD stations and that lowers the penetration even more.

1st run syndication allow for the possibility of 100% penetration (I don't know what Legend does reach).

It also allows flex viewing, where stations can program to their benefit (thus showing it at any hour). This can be a huge plus, or a serious handicap depending on where it does air in each local market. 4am not so good. 6pm-10pm fairly pretty good.

They also benefit in not going against original material on the networks (and for the most part cable).

What will be curious is to see how it would fair on a main prime time night (any night besides Saturday) on hours where the main networks schedule originals (8pm to 10pm). Most syndicated fare takes a huge hit doing that, but in years past there have been shows (TNG, DS9, Xena and Hercules) that manage to beat some for the networks (in TNG case in some markets all the competition).

Also they need to note that result includes counting multiple airings in the same market. Something network shows don't (Cable does though, when they air the same episode various times on their schedule that week).

Still the results are strong, and hopefully (though I don't watch the show) this shows that one avenue of broadcast thought dead does have some life left to it.
 
I saw part of it. Sadly I now have digital OTA tv, and there was a cloud or wind or something and the channel was lost for the majority of it. But my wife and I were vaguely interested in it right up to then.
 
Well, it's good news and yes, doe show that syndication is a viable option still. I hope it keeps chugging along and keeps doing well as I am really enjoying this show.

Anyway, I'm liking this show too - and so far no alumni from Xena, Hercules, and other SFF / Fantasy, at least not that I can detect, etc...which is a big plus for me.
 
Agreed. Although I still hate the actor playing the wizard. Something about his voice just bothers me.

I think he's the best part of the show...except when he was naked in the pilot-ewwwww! :)

You mean Bruce Spence? Yeah, he also played an alien in Ep. III - ROTS. The tall dude on Utaupah (sp?) His character name was Tion Medon.

I think he fits this wizard roll somewhat better than Ian McKellen did for Gandolf.

And in ROTK-EE, he was the mouth of Sauron.
