People are saying Rhys Darby is McCoy but I'm not seeing it. (He's also too old for McCoy's age at the timeframe). Same for being too old for Sybok honestly. He could be Mark Piper though, but that character is so obscure I can't see how the showrunners would expect anyone to be hyped up about it the way they seem to be advertising

There's no point bringing in any characters unless they contribute meaningfully to the show's existing characters.

I think the showrunners confirmed in a random interview that Chapel's professor and love interest Roger Korby is coming. So they will be engaged in the near future.

Leila Kalomi isn't too far off.

I tend to Agree. Personally I can easily see the Farragut disaster/Captain Garovic / Gary Mitchell/Carol Marcus as potentially relevant to Wesley's Kirk development. Perhaps even his childhood trauma of witnessing the Kodos incident. But there definitely needs to a creative narrative .

Carol Marcus at the very least makes sense as she's already been mentioned and could serve as a triangle of sorts between her and L'ann.
