Spoilers Legacy characters in Season 3

Personally I would love to see a pre breakdown Matt Decker (since Kirk and him seem to know each other well and Garroick was killed by space vampires does Farrguts captain work)

Rand always seemed mid-twenties to me. There was even a scene in "Charlie X" where she tries to get Charlie interested in a younger yeoman, implying a bit of an age difference between her and Charlie.
And I also don't see the teen aspect in "Miri" that's being alluded to.

I know actors tend to play younger, but Grace Lee Whitney was 36 years old when she was in Star Trek! She's a year older than William Shatner. There's nothing in Miri to suggest she is "at the tail end of puberty." As BK613 says, Charlie Evans is 17 and Rand is inappropriately old for him. She's gotta be mid-to-late 20s -- a suitable love interest for Kirk.

Maybe part of the confusion is the weirdness in Vonda McIntyre's Enterprise where Rand is inexplicably sixteen years old.

It was pretty much a plot point in Miri that Rand was at the tail end of puberty regardless of how old the actress was and looked. They treated her as a teenager (which makes the near rape scene with split Kirk all the more creepy).
No. Charlie Evans is 17 and they make it VERY clear that Rand is much older. There was a line in the Miri script that stated Rand was 24 (so she would be about 18 in SNW) but 24 really isn't much older than 17 and I prefer it if she was in her thirties like Whitney. She's been around the block unlike Colt and Smith and knows how best to handle Kirk.

That’s why I think it would be cool to see them expand the part and flesh out the character a bit. Whitney brought a certain sass to the part even when the role was frankly a little demeaning in the way it was written. They could easily expand her role and function. When I rewatch TOS, which is almost annually, I always miss her when she disappears after the first half dozen episodes. I’d definitely be here for a Justice for Rand twist.
Yeah, I find it quite frustrating that Rand features so rarely in the comics and novels. She's a great character, even if they only used her like they did O'Brien in TNG. They just need to strip out the sexism and let her be a technician.

As for some justice for Rand...

I would like to see Ash Tyler return. Maybe we can see Scotty but I was hoping we could continue some of those storylines Discovery left behind. Heck, even a prime Lorca sighting would be cool.

As others have pointed out, this really isn't the case. There's no way they'd hire an actress a year old than Shatner to play a 17-19 year old. They would just find a young looking 19 year old.

They never mentioned Janice's age, but I never once felt like she was all that young.

Yes Rand's whole arc in that novel was so very clearly written for Smith. It's absolutely canon that Rand is much older than Charlie so she can't be 16. Further, Corbomite Manoeuvre establishes that Rand is pretty new in post as Kirk's yeoman. Even the personality was completely wrong. It's ironic as it's one of her largest roles in any of the novels and it's clearly not actually her.

@Pauln6 Age 24 would be at the bottom what I would say fits Kirk's line about "the years being wrong." It's a seven year difference, after all.

Maybe Janice Rand.
Name's Smith, sir. ;)
Why is Leila Kalomi so popular a character?
Because Jill Ireland. :)

I'm sure SNW will feature Scotty and McCoy in some capacity before the series is over. They're not going to be able to help themselves. (And to be fair, I doubt I'd be able to, either. What Star Trek fan could resist the chance to write the first meetings of Prime Spock, Kirk, McCoy, and Scotty in canon?)

As long as they do a better job than that damned book we're talking about... a crushing disappointment considering how much I loved Ms. McIntyre's movie novelizations.

So Korby is basically guaranteed now.

Of all the mainstay TOS characters, I think Sulu could work. Nothing to contradict that he was on the 1701 a few years before Kirk took command.

Get rid of Rong Fu's 'Jenna Mitchell' "character." 19 episodes in, she's just a seat-filler, like the Discovery bridge crew, boring.

Sulu, in the blue uniform, can take over Navigations while Ortegas as at the Helm. He can be a character for Ortegas to play off of and finally get something worthwhile to do. It would be funny if they don't get along.

A martial artist for M'Benga to spar with.

Also, he can work under Spock in the astrosciences. They can give him a personality overhaul like they did for NUhura.
