Spoilers Legacy character announced for SNW

At least they don't have twenty-something actors with receding hairlines playing teens. ;)

What a weird phenomenon that casting choice always is. I think it sometimes skews what people without kids/who aren’t around any kids think teens actually look like.

USS Beverly Hills NCC-90210 - Cerritos Class Starship

That cast really was the most egregious example of that. Luke Perry, may he Rest in Peace, looked closer to my dad’s age than my then teenaged siblings when 90210 was new.

4 or 5 seasons of SNW, then handing the E over to Kirk really would have been the best thing.

I'm also hoping this is some sort of trick to get all the fans in a tizzy, which it has done, clearly.

Hi, newbie here

In the Menagerie Kirk says he met Pike when he was promoted to Fleet Captain, but does not say he never met him again. Also, Pike could be Fleet Captain and still have the Enterprise. Kirk could be on a Destroyer class ship under Pikes supervision. But don’t forget, Mendes says Pike is about the same age as Kirk, which is plainly not correct. We are hanging a lot on throwaway lines of dialogue from a show from a bygone era!

I look forward to seeing Kirk, but I would prefer to see him again in the much neglected Monster Maroon era.

Cheers

Gray
Welcome to the board! :)

Yeah, I was thinking Pike would still be commanding the fleet from Enterprise. In the shot of Kirk standing on set, Kirk has a different ship's insignia on his uniform, and in the captain's chair promo shot, the distinctive red trim of the bridge railings is gone, which might indicate he's on a different ship from the Enterprise and they just reused the bridge set with some minor tweaking.

Hoping for an explanation or things to fit with TOS is probably futile, but let's see...

I have a theory: Pike gets promoted to Fleet Captain during season 2, mostly because he needs to command a fleet of ships on a mission, and there can't be any ambiguity over seniority. Newly promoted Captain Kirk (of the USS Lydia Sutherland?) is one of those Captains. So Kirk is under Pike's command for this mission, but not part of his crew. The Toronto pictures show him wearing a different, not delta, insignia. A few years later Kirk takes command of the Enterprise from Pike. The promo picture may not actually reflect his costume in the episode.

But we don't know that's what's happening. He could just be a guest star for all we know. He could be there to establish the character for a future spin-off series with Kirk and the other TOS crew from SNW aboard the Enterprise in 2265.

If he looks too old to be Kirk in S2 of SNW, wouldn't it only be moreso in 2-3 years?

I could see a TOS Early Years spinoff, but again, a few more years down the road, obv after Pike moves on to Fleet Captain.

Yeah, maybe it's only from a scene where he's cheating on the Kobayashi Maru and he's in Captain's stripes for the test.

I said this elsewhere, but you don't cast an actor with the television pedigree of Paul Wesley for a glorified cameo role.
I didn't say it would be a one-off cameo role. I said he could be a guest actor for all or part of the season or as a means of establishing the character for a possible spin-off.

Obviously casting a new Kirk regardless of how long he lasts on the show is going to be an important event and not something the showrunners would take lightly.

Mostly the point of my post was about people not jumping to wild conclusions as a means to reject the character and situation out of hand. To adopt a more wait and see attitude until we have more information.

Yeah, he looks fine. And the physical resemblance to Shatner is quite startling at some angles - much closer than Pine. I don't think anyone in the JJ films other than Quinto and maybe Urban were cast for close likeness to the originals.

"Kirk rose very rapidly through the ranks and received his first command (the equivalent of a destroyer-class spaceship) while still quite young." - The Making of Star Trek, Stephen K. Whitfield & Gene Roddenberry, 1968.

For years people said I looked a good deal younger than I am. That stopped happening a few years ago, and rather abruptly - aging, in my experience, is not a long gentle slide in later years but rather a series of sudden steep drops.

I struggle to stick the landing. ;)
