Lawsuit May Cancel The 2012 Golden Globes

This year's Golden Globes was kind of a landmark for the awards show. No, I'm not talking about the fact that the Hollywood Foreign Press Association has absolutely no sense of humor. I'm referring to the fact that the whole thing is a joke, where movies like Burlesque and The Tourist are ranked among the best films of the year while a movie like True Grit gets completely snubbed. Of course it's been that way for quite a while, but this year's ceremony really drove the point home. Lucky for us, we may not have to deal with it next year.

Lawsuit May Cancel The 2012 Golden Globes

Looks like we all may have to settle for it being on TBS again for a while...

Award Shows are a massive waste of time.
Only musicians and actors get a stage to publicly pat themselves on the back. I even like many of their products but haven't watched an awards show from start to finish in 10 years.

I don't see Pentium, Apple, IBM etc getting prime time coverage for awards in design, software application, etc...

I don't see Allstate, State Farm, Geico etc getting prime tv time for awards in Covered Most People, Fast Reimbursement Time etc...

I enjoy products from these industries but don't see them getting air time for glorified back patting.

I see the possible departure of the Golden Globes a step in the right direction.

The only thing I like about award shows is that it forces me to watch movies that I wouldn't normally watch because then I can be part of the conversation and debate. Like tonight, I watched "Winter's Bone." I probably wouldn't have if it wasn't nominated for Best Picture, and while I think it's an overrated movie, I at least have a thought about it unlike those who hate or like something without even have seeing it.

What do you mean "get"? They don't "get" an awards show, a production company sells the broadcast to a distributor who makes money selling advertising. They can do this because millions of people are interested in celebrities and will tune in to watch. They are not interested in 45 year old software engineers or insurance salesman.

I would note that corporations and associations have awards all the time for their employees, sometimes large scale banquets and balls that cost millions of dollars to stage and have thousands in attendance at fancy resorts and convention centres. They just don't put it on TV because no one outside the industry is interested.

If you don't want to watch, don't. I don't watch them either. They are hardly a blight on civilization, there are only a handful of show each year, and while they might be a waste of time to you, they're simply entertainment to someone else. I'm sure something you enjoy watching is equally boring to someone else.

Wow, talk about a massive dissection of a statement!!

They "get" the time because of the ad dollars, yes. Of course viewership for these fluctates frequently and the average of viewership keeps going down, with some spikes.

If they go away it won't be any great loss.

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association is becoming too much of an open joke for the awards to continue anyway. The HFPA needs to be reformed or the Globes should fold.

They have booze at the Golden Globes. It makes the actors interesting. And it adds suspense, wondering if this is when it all comes out.

Every awards show ever made:

- A bunch of actors doing TelePrompTer readings so stilted they make porn acting look Oscar-worthy

- A bunch of OTHER actors acting all high and mighty and patting each other on the back

- The end.
