The murder of a cult member who had been convicted of murder herself sends Detectives Winters and Jaruszalski on a torturous investigation involving the woman's fellow cult members. Yet somehow, this leads them to one of the original investigating detectives—Winter's wife, Lori. This turn of events puts DDAs Dekker and Stanton in an awkward position as they probe the old case, and the new, for the truth.

Posting a thread for this episode since it marks Terrence Howard's debut on this show (and I believe Rachel Ticotin too). But I won't be watching any further, so if the show is a hit on this board, maybe someone else can do the episode threads.

On a side note, has anyone seen this L&O pic before? I just now saw it, and wonder why they couldn't get Dianne Wiest and Michael Moriarty to do it.

How does Skeet Ulrich keep getting work? He makes Robert Beltran look like a mega star actor.

I keep wondering the same myself. I just wish Teri Polo had been the lead and Ulrich was the retired cop, stay home parent.

I don't think I'm going to bother with this show either. I've never been a fan of Howard and he continues to bore me here. I was hoping for some zest from Peter Coyote but he seems to be bored by the role. Everyone else is uninteresting except Molina but he's not good enough for me to bother.

Wow, that's pretty cool. I haven't seen that before. I love how George Dzundza is staring at Jill Hennessy's cleavage.

The caption says the photo was shot in March 2003, which would have been during the time that Moriarty had gone completely native up in Canada, drinking heavily and ranting and raving about the evils of liberalism, so I doubt they wanted anything to do with him, and vice-versa. I'm not sure about Wiest, however.

As for the episode itself, the show is still finding its footing, so I'll give it another two or three weeks, but I am just not impressed at all thus far.

I like the bald detective, I think he's fun to watch. Ulrich--bland, bland, bland.

And I wish it was just Molina, Howard's ok, but I think Molina's character could develop into something really interesting.

:scream:
First Lindsey Hilton now Manson. They are trying to hard to be LA LA Land and not hard enough to be Robbery Homicide

Re: Law & Order: Los Angeles: "Echo Park" - Oct. 6 - Grading & Discuss

Much better than last week, but I've zapped this show off my DVR recording list. The prospect of one disconnected case after another just doesn't interest me - I just find the procedural format boring.

For Skeet's wife to possibly be a dirty cop (and the question of how much he cares and what he's prepared to do about it) is possibly interesting, but I don't know enough about either character to know what to think about this development. It's all happening in a vacuum and the % of time the show is likely to spend on character development that might make it meaningful is too low; it'll take too much time to get to know these characters to be worth investing the time in.

They could ramp up with the characters more quickly if the dialogue wasn't so utilitarian and flat, but instead was used cleverly to reveal character. Then by now I'd have a better sense of: how much of a Boy Scout is Skeet? How likely is it that his wife was a dirty cop and/or just did one bad thing in the past? What is the basis for their marriage - do they really know each other, even after presumably many years, or is it possible that this is one of those sad cases of spouses realizing their strangers to each other? Dialogue that hints at such things after two episodes wouldn't require that much extra effort on the writers' part, but clearly that isn't their priority.

Plus I have no idea if or when the Skeet's-dirty-copy-wife plotline will ever be revisited, or if it ever will be. Next week will be some fribble about surfers, not interested.

How does Skeet Ulrich keep getting work? He makes Robert Beltran look like a mega star actor.
He does a lot better with sf/f shows where there's more drama inherent in the situation and character - Miracles and Jericho - and it's a welcome relief if the actor isn't adding much to the emotional content. But with the stripped down L&O style, a flat actor really isn't that good of an idea. Then again, if the audience wants stripped-down dialogue, plotting and characters, maybe a flat actor is also a good thing?

I really don't understand what the appeal of any of this is, so why single out Skeet? Everything about this show is happening in the emotional equivalent of Flatland. It's like some weird sophorific parallel universe. Maybe this show is for people who feel exhausted by real life and find it comforting to have everything dialed way down so they can zone out before bedtime.

Re: Law & Order: Los Angeles: "Echo Park" - Oct. 6 - Grading & Discuss

So, judging by the promo for next week's episode, I guess I was right. It looks like LOLA is going the Criminal Intent route & alternating between Howard & Molina as the main prosecutors. I like them both, and I've always said that all Law & Order needs is a good prosecutor to get it across the finish line.

Still... I miss Jack McCoy (and his Jr. clone, Michael Cutter)!:( It's hard for me to watch the show without feeling like I'm cheating on Jack.

But I'm willing to give the show a chance, especially since it's on next to SVU. (I'm really looking forward to next week's SVU episode. The only thing sexier than Olivia Benson is Olivia Benson on halucinogenics!)

Yeah. From what I've gathered, Moriarty & Wolf still haven't buried the hatchet. However, it's nice to see that George Dzundza was willing to come back. (IIRC, he left on less than great terms but that was mostly just because he didn't like working in New York.) But what about Steven Hill?

Anyone remember Boomtown? That's what this show should have been. :)

Re: Law & Order: Los Angeles: "Echo Park" - Oct. 6 - Grading & Discuss

Wow. Massive improvement over the pilot. I really enjoy the detective dynamic and the setting now.

Good episode. Much better than the pilot so I wish NBC had aired this one first because the pilot was rather dull.
