Law & Order: Complete Series DVD set announced!

Reading the article, it'd be 104 DVD discs with an average 4 episodes per disc. That boils down to $6.73 per disc, which as they say isn't really all that bad.

What is bad is that in other words, you get 20 seasons of Law & Order for the same amount of money you could get all seven seasons of TNG when they were first released.

I saw that and I'm giving my ex all my L&O as a result. I really hate when they start putting out season sets and then bag it in favour of the big box. On the other hand it saves me buying L&O box sets in future and putting that money towards something useful like games or an iPad.

The bonus material is severely lacking. Only one of the Homicide: Life on the Street episodes included, no word on Exiled, and no cast interviews or commentaries. Not worth that price tag and I don't care about the math.

$700 is too much for any TV series, I don't care how long it's been on the air. And let's be honest, the whole set probably costs around $30 to manufacture. $250 would be a "sweet spot" price for that many episodes, in my opinion, and that would leave plenty of money for royalties and such.

I bought BSG on DVD--the entire series--for $80. That's about a buck an episode. Using the same yardstick for vanilla L&O, that would be about $450 for the whole series. Factor in that L&O has been rerun to death and I just don't see any way the entire series is worth anywhere near $700. Whoever did the profit maximization curve on this must've been smoking something.

way way way too much, I got all 10 seasons of SG-1 for around $90 even doubling that for L&O's 20 season run I think would be too much, unless they threw in some extras like a nice leather bound episode guide/Jerry Orbach tribute

You're confusing MSRP (which is the $700 price, and is a hell of a lot more than $80 for BSG) with actual retail price.

Amazon has the set retailing for $490, and I won't be surprised if that drops further before release (it's only a 30% discount right now).

So why does anyone even bother setting MSRP if no one will actually sell it near that price? :p

Sounds cool:techman: It is nice that they replace the flipper discs.
Though I do hope they use the proper holders for the DVDs..and not those paper things we have sadly seen in many complete series-boxes:rolleyes:

For $700 it better come in a titanium case, amirite? :p

If it's anything like textbooks (which don't have MSRP printed on the spine like most novels), the MSRP is what's used to determine how much vendors have to pay to get the books in their hands.

$700 for a set of 104 DVDs in an economy that is steadily getting worse is an example of disconnectedness, IMHO.

Really? Can you show me an example of a similar forthcoming product at a significantly cheaper price per hour of content?

If that is the real cost I will continue to watch repeats on the TV and not spend the money.

For $700, either Chris Noth, Benjamin Bratt, Michael Moriarty, Elisabeth Rohm, Jill Hennessy, Linus Roach, Carey Lowell, Richard Brooks or Jeremy Sisto will sit next to you and recite the "In the criminal justice system" opening every time you watch an episode. Who recites it will depend on where you live.

Oh, what, they're too cheap to reanimate Jerry Orbach's corpse?

Just repeating what was stated earlier in the thread, the set isn't selling for $700, Amazon has it for less than $500 which is quite reasonable for TWENTY years of a show. I'd expect a similar price if they ever did a complete Gunsmoke or Simpsons when it eventually ends. And does anyone think the inevitable 50th anniversary "everything we have" Doctor Who set covering 32+ seasons in 2013 will sell for anything less than that?

If someone is a fan of the show, it's a good deal. As has been pointed out elsewhere, $500 (or $490 or whatever) works out reasonable per-season simply for the 10+ seasons that are going to be released for the first time in the set. I was criticized for spending $220 or whatever it was for The Six Million Dollar Man complete series last year. Well I'd been waiting a generation for it (not exaggerating), so it was worth the cash. And I'll pony up for that Doctor Who set too. I've no interest in L&O as a full series but I think it's cool they're doing this.
