A novelist's apparent suicide soon changes to a murder investigation with suspects that include a cult and her husband, but Cutter's case may not be closed when jury tampering puts lives at risk.

Anthony Anderson's first episode is tonight. I liked him last week, so I'll be interested to see how the new partnership goes.

Yes or no: Is Anderson playing the same character he did when he guest-starred on SVU last year?

No. Which means that both detectives will now be played by actors who've previously appeared in the L&O franchise in different roles (Sisto played a defense attorney a year or two ago).

No. His SVU character was Lucius Blaine; this time it's Kevin Bernard.

And tonight's episode was lame. CI did a much better job of ripping from the Scientology headline ("Con-Text"), and that was 5 years ago or thereabouts. This time? Lame-o.

The story was lame and not exactly "ripped from the headlines", unless someone is getting their paper about 10 years late.

And, I think I officially dislike everybody now, except for Van Buren and Jack.

I've always liked at least one of the cops at any given time, but I don't like Sisto's character and I dislike Anderson's. (It might not be fair, but I can't shake the character he played on SVU and I really disliked that character.)

I'm thinking that, unless they retool soon, the flagship L&O is going down.

Yeah, this was a poor attempt on parodying Scientology. The only thing I was surprised by this episode was that Systemotics' wasn't put on trial for the murder. Not that it matter since Systemotics was pretty much put on trial anyways.

Interesting you say that because earlier this season, most people (including myself) felt that the show managed to rejuvenate itself. Granted, Jesse L. Martin's mid-season departure doesn't help, but I think we should give Anthony Anderson more time to get into the role.

I can't really think of any way to describe this episode other than "lame." I was so bored throughout the entire thing. I will say this, though: Cutter can certainly pull off "creepy as all hell" quite well.

It bugged me that they had Bernard already working as Lupo's partner without explanation. I thought it would take a while for him to earn that position. I mean, just last week he played a role in Green's departure, so just dropping him into Green's job right away feels kind of ghoulish. Sure, he turned around and helped clear Green last week, but still, that doesn't seem like enough.

And for an episode based on Scientology, it ended up being kind of wishy-washy, not being willing to paint the "Systemotics" cult in too bad a light, and painting its critics as paranoids and opportunists.

Also, it had kind of a formulaic feel: a problem arises with the case, Cutter is stymied and upset, Jack offers words of wisdom that solve Cutter's problem, lather, rinse, repeat.

And when Cutter did come up with his own tactic at the end, exploiting the guy's paranoia to wring a confession out of him, that was just about the most sleazy and unethical thing I've ever seen a prosecutor do on this show, and with McCoy's record, that's saying something. He terrorized that man into accepting a plea, and the fact that the source of terror was the man's irrational fear doesn't make that any less a violation of the defendant's rights and of the integrity of the system. Surely the defense lawyer could've gotten the confession thrown out? I don't find it believable that he caved in so easily.

Ah, that's another thing. While the final scene was creepy, I also think it was unethical. I feel that Cutter finally crossed the line and did something that Jack would have never considered. It's something I would like to see followed up, but I doubt it will happen.
