One assumes Warners would like something teen-angsty to replace Smallville - which was originally envisioned as a sort of Buffy meets Dawson's Creek.

And that's smething that really bugs me. Superman is, well, Superman. He's not 90210 fodder. If they want teenage angst (which is why I gave up on Heroes), they should do Teen Titans or, from the other side of the aisle, X-Men. Plenty of angst there.
