Its a Last Starfighter sequel!
February 27, 2008 Writer : Clint Morris

Proof of God, or just an outrageous rumour that wants us to believe there is such a thing as a higher being?

I refer to Cinema Blends report that Lance Guest's one and only bonafide blockbuster - and Gen-X fave - 1984s "The Last Starfighter" , the story of a teenage video-game buff who is recruited to fly space-ships for real, is set to get a sequel.

Is it real? Is it actually happening? Is the ghost of Robert Preston in talks to return? And what about Lance Guest, does he get to eat this year?

A scooper, who the site says checked out, says “It involves original director Nick Castle, writer Jonathan Betuel and actor Lance Guest. It's your basic Son of the Starfighter storyline and actually sounds pretty cool".

Apparently a company called Paige and Associates, who work with Warner Brothers and Universal Pictures, are behind the film.

The sequel will fix on the 'Son' of the Last Starfighter - so it makes sense to have Guest back. Having said that, I can only imagine that such a film - if Guest is again the star, and considering most kids today wouldn't have the foggiest what the movie even is - would go direct-to-DVD. Not that I'd be complaining.

CinemaBlend did some research and discovered that George Paige really does have this listed on their upcoming slate of films, so there could be some truth to this....

Shizzle Whizzle, I dunno, but if there is one smart person left in Hollywood let it be the guy that wants to follow-up a much-loved flick like "Starfighter".

I've seen the movie a few times on scifi. It's a funny 80's scifi movie

It's a great movie, with a fantastic soundtrack. And I think there's even an off-Broadway musical, too!

Some dude has been yapping about this for years on the IMDb. Glad to hear that they might make a sequel to this, I love the original.

I'd pay to see it. TLS is one of my favorite movies. It's just too bad that Robert Preston had the bad grace to go and die beofre they could do it.

Hope it's true! Loved that movie!

Wonder if they are going to update Centauri's Videogame trainer. Maybe now it's an Xbox title. :)

100,000 stories on the sci-fi shelf that haven't been done yet,
and they have to go do a rehash of a 1980s video-game movie???

Ewwwwww.

Maybe Sci-Fi channel needs another colon movie---

The Last Starfighter: We couldn't think anything else up.

I finally saw the original on TV a few months back, and I thought it was really good. I really hope this is true, and that it gets a decent budget so that they can do decent battle scenes. Who did Rober Preston play?

I believe Robert Preston played Centari. I can see it now. A kid goes to a video game arcade museum. He scores the highest on Starfighter, breaking even Alex's record. The legend continues!

I'm pretty sure this wasn't based on a video-game, the game was only a plot device within the film...

When and If this movie gets done it in no way prevents anyone else from going out to either make their own movie based on an "original idea" or adapting some novel to the screen.

"The Last Starfighter: We couldn't think anything else up" this is totally unfair. Would you make the same derisive complaint of someone who adapted an establish work of fiction to the screen or a studio greenliting a sequel to perhaps a larger property? You could just as easily sling a statement at Peter Jackson for making making LoTR.

TLS is a great popcorn flick with an awesome soundtrack, and helped pioneer the use of CGI. I can totally get behind a sequel.

Fuck yeah! Activate Death Blossom!

But now that Robert Preston has left us :( , who could possibly play Centauri like he did?

And did anyone catch Marc "Dukat" Alaimo as the hitchhiker who gets 'unmasked' as an alien? :)

The Last Starfighter was no blockbuster. It didn't do all that well in theaters. It's a movie most people discovered on TV reruns.

I've always loved this movie. I suppose a sequel could be okay. We don't need a remake especially because you could never get another Catherine Mary Stewart.

It's so much fun doing the lines for this movie while watching it.
