Last Star Trek Movie?

It is my opinuion, as a long time fan, that Star Trek has been Stagnating, and that this new movie is filled fwith nrew themes, new actors and a new "imagE" so it will "appeal to a broader demographic" as the ST XI team has said. If this movie performs poorly as the last ones have, will this mean that Star Trek will lose its next Series and this will be the last film?

Thoughts?

Possibly, assuming the film preforms poorly. But then, I thought the franchise was dead when Enterprise went off the air.

If it does poorly it may be the last Star Trek film for a while, but I doubt it will be the last Trek film ever.

It may be. Or it may not be.

Normally, I don't go out on a limb like this and make such concrete predictions, but an original topic like this demands it.

I really don't think Trek belonged on the silver screen to begin with. I'd prefer it to be a single, on-going series rather than a film franchise or TV spinoff that needlessly reinvents the wheel every seven years or less.

Star Trek to me will always be alive, even if the world decides to forget it...
The world won't forget it. What will happen is the world won't put up with anything new that is made for it. After awhile, it starts to be repetitive. Time Travel? How many times can we have a bad guy do something so we have to go back in time to fix it?
There is no more originality in Star Trek. No more of the original life it had. Kirk went back in time and let Edith Keller die so that things would be correct. Now it's all about having a bad guy to contend with. There is no moral delima, no choice between right and wrong, it's just dumbed down, him vs. me.

I hope and think the new writers and producers get this, and will take this opportunity to make a Trek film that has at its core, a theme that deals with the human condition, and something pro-humanity and its potential. This would end the cycle of mindless TNG films and remind people what Trek is about.

That's so not the issue and has little or no reason why new people haven't cared about Star Trek (which is actually Star Trek's problem. No one new cares about and the old guard is to myopic to allow it to change and grow and set its patterns on their noses). Pick any random story from any genre and sure enough you'll find ALL its plot devices have been used, and used often. Usually though its the method and ability of the creative forces behind the scenes that cause any project to be regarded as "original" or fresh.

I assure you, this Star Trek movie will stand all on its own and will be unique in how it presents itself. If you're expecting a by the numbers Trek movie you will probably be disappointed and it may not even "feel like Trek to you".

To outright answer: No this won't be the last Trek movie, it will more then likely be the first in a group of new Style Star Trek - surely Paramount is thinking in these longer terms.

that needlessly reinvents the wheel every seven years or less.

That's an unrealistic expectation. Sticking with the same formula has been part of Star Trek's problem. Those behind the scenes have been scared to venture outside Trek's comfort zone to shake up how the show presents itself or tells it stories.

If the movie performs poorly, rather than never seeing another film or TV series, I suppose the studio could just relegate the franchise to direct-to-dvd sequel /b-movie serial status a la Starship Troopers. Wouldn't that be fun?

Which did you have a bigger problem with while you were watching Star Trek XI: the acting, the directing, or the writing?
