Last Doctor Who Story you listened to?

Haven't heard anything solid about that since basically ever.

I'm now finished the currently available Space: 1999 audios, and I actually quite liked the final episode, the second half of an extended remake/remodel of "Earthbound." I'm actually looking forward to the next instalment, whenever that may be. But next, probably back to Torchwood.

Edit: and I have in fact returned to Torchwood, listening to main range audio 55, The Great Sontaran War by James Goss. This range can do stories with somewhat silly premises (Torchwood puts a Sontaran soldier up in a caravan or trailer park) and do them well, having a lot of fun with it, even while having some serious moments along the way. Ianto's our one familiar face, who keeps popping in to keep an eye on things. Next up is a story featuring Dorothy McShane, a.k.a. Ace, and Mr. Colchester, and I expect that will be quite enjoyable. Tomorrow night, probably.

As much as I like the classic Doctors' stories for Big Finish, I get a special kick from things like the Tenth Doctor and River Song box set. Only listened to the first one so far but it's fun.

Continuing my occasional effort to keep this alive...

I just finished the Ninth Doctor Back to Earth box set. One good story more than slightly reminiscent of Sapphire and Steel, one average story, and a really good one to end things with, following the perspective of a single story companion, more or less, as the Doctor pops into the story from different times. Very nice. Gosh, it's good to have these Eccleston stories to make up for his too-short time on TV.

In other recent listening, I've done the first two Torchwood Soho sets now, and they're really enjoyable. Norton Folgate may be an audio-original character but he's made himself a key part of what Torchwood is now, as has Mr. Colchester. Some of the "... Among Us" new characters don't have quite the same presence, but I guess we'll be encountering them again soon enough, this time with Gwen Cooper back.

Also did the second Class box set, not quite as strong as the first, and the recast characters took a few minutes to get used to, but overall there was some good material there. I'm still hopelessly behind, of course. I'm not sure I'm listening to enough to keep from falling farther behind. But I hope to retire in a few years, so I'll have something to occupy my time with.

Listened to The Sandman. A decent premise (The Doctor acts as the boogeyman to an alien species), but a poor story overall, and the voice modifying of the aliens was especially annoying. I have to say, I still don't find Evelyn a particularly interesting companion. She's not bad by any means, but it still feels like she's pretty overrated by Big Finish fans, at least from what I've heard with her up to this point.

I've spent the last couple of weeks listening to The Ravenous, an episode a night, and quite enjoyed it. I like the fact that the Ravenous themselves are a relatively small part of it, because that allows us to get a variety of stories, some of which seem barely connected to the main storyline, until all is revealed later. The way the Ravenous are described is also not great, so I don't mind not hearing a lot from them. But there's a lot of familiar faces showing up here and there, pretty much all being enjoyable, and Helen and Liv get a lot of airtime. The more I hear of Liv the more I realize why Big Finish just won't let her go. (I'm looking forward to season 2 of Annika on TV, which has Nicola Walker and Paul McGann in rather different roles.) As for what's next... Stranded? Or some Torchwood or Blake's 7? Maybe the second volume of UFO.

If I can keep up averaging maybe six hours a week, it'll only take years to come close to catching up with Big Finish instead of decades. Maybe.

I felt like mixing up the Doctor Who audio listening with a different Doctor, so I listened to Colditz. The 7th Doctor and Ace were fine, but the story was just kind of average. I thought it was a bit too sympathetic to some of the Nazi characters, and the story felt a bit repetitive and listless at times. Not a bad story by any means, and it was interesting to hear David Tennant, but I didn't find it to be anything special.

Have you seen Colditz? (The tv series with David McCallum, Robert Wagner and others) Often sympathetic to the Germans... though not all of them.

I'd never heard of Colditz Castle before listening to this story, but I can see why the setting of a prison camp in an old castle has been used for multiple shows.

Hmm,,,, skimmed through this whole topic trying to see if I mentioned a particular box set, because my checklist spreadsheet shows I only listened to the first two of four and that doesn't seem right. But my memory's so bad that just reading a description of the stories isn't enough to decide whether I heard them or not. No luck in this case, but I can pretty clearly tell without looking at posting dates when I stopped posting because my wife died, and when I stopped posting because of the pandemic lockdowns and telework. Well, in the interest of making sure I don't miss anything, here comes River Song in The Lifeboat and the Deathboat, which I'm at least 30% sure I listened to and just didn't update my spreadsheet. We'll see.

ETA: Yep. Heard it before, so I've probably heard part 4 too. So, what next....

Doctor Who and the Pirates, which I just listened to, ended up being really good, a lot better then I expected. I even really liked the weird story format (Evelyn and The Doctor telling a story to someone, and occasionally changing details as they go), and the musical episode was surprisingly fun. I had kind of guessed the reason they were telling the story like this fairly early on, but it didn't effect my enjoyment of the story. Overall, this was a very good story, probably the best one with Evelyn that I've heard so far.

I remember liking the Pirates well enough, but I don't remember it all that well. I did generally like the Evelyn stories, though, because of the way she and the Sixth Doctor interacted.

I've probably said it here a few times before, but darn, the Torchwood main range is good. Hardly any duds and a lot of really good stories. The Lincolnshire Poacher has the kind of audio storytelling experimentation that some of the early Doctor Who range used to have, tossing Ianto Jones into a story built from scraps of recordings, numbers stations messages, and the like. And then for something completely different the next month we get The Empire Man, in which Queen Victoria, her aide, and her prime minister tell ghost stories that have some strange connections.

Just listened to Master, and I think its a legitimate masterpiece (if you'll excuse the pun). Its such a great story of The Master and his relationship with The Doctor. Its also features a much better origin story for The Master then "a sound sent back in time made him go crazy". I'd call it a definite must listen to.

Wait, did you just admit to liking a Seventh Doctor story?

Is the world coming to an end?!

I actually like several 7th Doctor stories. Specifically:

TV:
Delta and the Bannermen (My favorite 7th Doctor story, with THE best version of the 7th Doctor)
Remembrance of the Daleks
Silver Nemesis
Battlefield
Survival

Audio:
Master
All Consuming Fire
We are the Daleks

His character does annoy me at times when he goes full evil, and his TV run also has my most hated Doctor Who story ever (The Greatest Show in the Galaxy), but even as my least favorite Classic Doctor there is still stuff to enjoy with the 7th Doctor, and I'm open to him having more good stories in the audio format. In this case, even being my least favorite Classic Doctor still means I like him and have some fondness for the character, even if I find his era to have more misses then hits and I don't always agree with the directions the character went.

I'm two hours into Stranded, with the Eighth Doctor, Liv, and Helen stuck in 2020 London, and I'm enjoying it so far. It's a very welcome change of pace from the previous series of Eighth Doctor box sets.

If anyone's interested, I made a short animated version of a scene from the Eighth Doctor audio story Dark Eyes:
