Last Classic Who Story you watched

It seems to have a bad reputation, but I thought that Warriors of the Deep was ok. I mean, it wasn't amazing or anything, but it was an entertaining serial, albeit one with lower quality sets/costumes than I'd expect even from the era. It was nice to see the Silurians and sea devils again, even if the costumes were a bit shoddy and the sea devils dressed like samurai for some reason. Overall its an entertaining, but admittedly not great, serial from the 5th Doctor's era, despite its flaws.

IMO, the worst part is the Part 1 cliffhanger when Turlough is immediately writing off the Doctor as dead when he's barely been in the water long enough to get his hair wet. There's a lot of obnoxious, cowardly Turlough in this story.

Certainly the Zygons were one of the most ambitious designs the classic series ever attempted. Is it just my nostalgia influencing my perception, or was there "something" even creepier about the facial structure of the original costumes compared to the current prosthetic appliances? The "new" Zygons have more defined faces that seem to take away a bit of the "uncanny valley" effect that actually worked FOR them in the original story. There was something almost "fetal" about Broton and his shipmates.

Excellent observation, the word Zygon was taken from the word zygote the earliest form of a fetus.

I watched The Time Warrior today. It was a good story, but not without flaws. The biggest problem for me is that Sarah Jane makes a fairly mediocre first impression. Not a bad one, but very unimpressive. In fact, my least favorite scenes where when she wasn't with The Doctor, both with the good king and in the kitchen of the bad guy's castle. She was somewhat annoying and not very entertaining. Overall she was ok, but she definitely had a lot of room to grow.

The main story was pretty good, and the 3rd Doctor had a very active adventure this time, with a bunch of running and venusian karate. The human villain wasn't very memorable, but he was ok for what his role was. The good guys in the past were very bland and forgettable, I didn't even know the bowman's name until the very end. The introduction of the sontarans was handled well, and Commander Linx was a good first example of the species. Overall, this was an enjoyable, if a bit flawed, serial.

The Time Warrior might be my favorite Pertwee serial. Either that, or Day of the Daleks. Solid good fun - with Bob Holmes dialogue goodness to boot!

I haven't watched all of the 3rd Doctor serials yet, but my favorites so far are probably The Three Doctors and Terror of the Autons in a tie, with Inferno and Spearhead from Space very close to them. But, I do like the era a lot. Jon Pertwee always seems to be a Doctor who I don't think about as often as the others, but who always reminds me how much I like him whenever I see one of his stories.

I liked Irongron myself and him and Commander Linx made a good twisted version of the Doctor and Brigadier relationship. Linx was really good and definitely set the tone for the Sontarans.

I won't disagree about the good guys but hey, one of them was Boba Fett with a bow and arrow! ;)

"The Time Monster." I don't know why, but for some reason this doesn't "pop" for me as one of the really great stories, but it is very well done and worth looking at technically.

First off, the dialog is very very good. Of course we've got the Doctor's big speech about the darkest day in his life and the "daisiest daisy," but there's lots of other lines that actually caught my attention and made my brain consciously say "that's some very good writing!" And everything is delivered very well. The aforementioned daisy speech, the way the Doctor handles Jo when she keeps interrupting is very warm and natural.

The other thing is this is technically a 6 parter, but it is more like two 3 parters--you've got the bit at the university, trying to stop the Master. Then you go to Atlantis...and try to stop the Master. And unlike "Inferno" they're almost completely separate. There isn't a lot of out of focus spinning ball of tinfoil and "Meanwhile, back on our Earth..." Technically a very interesting story.

An hour into "The Three Doctors." Sadly, Retro doesn't have "The Five Doctors" in its package. But this one is fast becoming a favorite. It's nice to see a Troughton story with all the wiped ones--and in color, no less. And the Brig's reaction to the 2nd Doctor showing up--and the inside of the TARDIS is priceless. Seeing Pertwee and Troughton play off each other is great, and for his failing health and noticeably heavier frame, Hartnell does well, stuck in the viewscreen. The "Hmm!? Hmm?!" takes me straight back to the early 1960s.

"The Five Doctors" isn't available on any of the various streaming sources either. I eventually just decided to buy it. According the TARDIS Datacore, it's neither a part of season 20 or 21, but rather an original "Children in Need" special, much like "Timecrash", which might explain its absence from various syndication packages. Also, its 90-minute length might make in an awkward fit in Retro's schedule.

^ Yeah, season 20 is 22-episodes long; originally Resurrection of the Daleks was planned to end the season. That would have made it a full 26 episodes, plus The Five Doctors in between seasons.
