Last Action Hero (1993).

I think there was also a certain amount of Tall Poppy Syndrome - Arnold at that time was the biggest star in the world, and was behaving accordingly, being even more arrogant than usual. By chance, I just reread an old issue of Empire where they had an article on the movie, and it was a (highly entertaining, admittedly) hatchet job. And Empire were by no means alone. The critics basically decided to say "Fuck you, Arnold!" all at the same time.

I still enjoy it, though. Considering how ludicrous some action movies have become, it didn't go nearly far enough in its satire...

Yeah, critics attack some stars. Christian Bale is a current target. His cussing out the guy on the Terminator Salvation set was all the excuse they needed to pounce on him. And of course, there's Tom Cruise, who's antics fuel future bashings. And the ever reliable Mel Gibson...

Just like Voyager, had it not been for the internet I wouldn't have known people disliked it that much.

I was very young when I first saw it, but I remember liking it a lot. It has been a while since I saw it though, and I was just a kid back then.

Underrated movie. It's not a classic by any means but it doesn't deserve the flack it's gotten especially when it first came out.

Audiences knew Arnold as an action star who made action movies with one-liners, they weren't ready for self-satire wrapped in a fantasy plot.

...

So, I blame, you, the American public. Fuck your fucking CGI dinosaurs.

 Yeah, it couldn't possibly be the stuio's fault. You know, the studio that claimed it was the biggest action movie of the year and bought ad space on the side on an actual rocket that was launched into space while claiming it would be the biggest blockbuster of the year.

Gee, how on earth did the public get the idea that it was going to be a straight action movie??

And lets forget the fact that it wasn't great movie. The director knew during primary shooting that there would need to be reshoots to fix some parts of the story, but Columbia had only scheduled 10 weeks of post production which is an amazingly short amount of time for a film that doesn't need fixing, let alone one that had story problems from the start.

In short, they were screwed even without Jurassic Park.

What's funny is that Arnold later went on to make "Eraser" which had all the cliches(one liners, hardcore rock song at the end, and impossible stunts)

As well, as the occassionaly seen movie invention...the patriotic mobster (which Last Action Hero didn't have, but The Rocketeer, did).

Yeah, I was rewatching the end of ERASER last night. It was a total step backwards for Arnold. I think the whole movie was built around the line "Choove juss ban eerased!"....er... "You've just been erased."

After TRUE LIES, Arnold's movies started to slip. He should've revisited his older roles sooner or chosen better scripts and directors (Cameron and Verhoeven did much for Arnold's career).

I think there's the HUDSON HAWK curse. Even though Bruce Willis rose to fame as a smart-ass jokester on Moonlighting, the success of DIE HARD (which he ironically seemed cast against type) propelled him to action hero icon.

Put me down as someone who loved Hudson Hawk too.

What are you nuts? Hudson Hawk was rubbish!

Last Action Hero on the other hand, is very underrated...not vastly underrated, it's just not as bad as some seam to want to make it. Since someone else mentioned it, The Rocketeer was another underrated film from around the same time (IIRC). Easily the best superhero flick since Donner's Superman (beating the crap out of Burton's Batman) and I dare say it still held the title right up until Batman Begins was released.

Last action hero is a good movie. The only thing I'd change is the boy... Gosh this guy is so annoying and a bad actor... I don't remember seeing him anywhere else...

...No sequel for you ! Blam !

Butch

I liked it. It wasn't a horrible film but it wasn't great either.

Plus Arnie's character's daughter was hot.
