News Lashana Lynch to be the new 007...

What do you mean?

James Bond is James Bond, still Craig, likely to not be recast as a female version (Barbara Broccoli has said as much in the past) so while it’s the oo7 role, it’s not the oo7 role as it were.

Ariel is...well, Ariel is a mermaid, and this an adaptation of an adaptation and the wars over that will burn for weeks at least, requiring all sorts of mental leaps as to why she can’t be dark skinned, or why it’s ok to recast one groups storytelling heritage and not another, and both sides will be horrifyingly right and terrifyingly wrong all at once and fight each other to the death with forks in their Hair.

Ídris? He’s too street apparently. Which frankly I always took to mean he’s too London and too working class. Though perhaps I am being too kind, and too street myself.

This oo7 business is so obviously not a recast Bond that anyone arguing for or against it on those terms is a wee bit tup, or at the very least, has too much time on their hands. Much like all of us on various forums discussing it right now. XD
Or looking for the argument...seems a few have already taken that approach on both sides. Angry people looking for the next big war for those with keyboards and touch screens to battle in.

She's 007 not James Bond so I would class that as a new role. They are building a brand new character (presumably totally different from James). I'm very intrigued in this concept should they do it.

I wonder if James might actually die in this new movie? Jesus a female 007 and the death of James Bond...

Piers Morgan is going to have a stroke!
Getting away from Bond and focusing on the 00s as a group would be a great way to expand the series.

*Grabs popcorn and waits for the bro flake explosion*
I personally revel in watching all the people sharpening their knives in preparation to pounce on the outrage they are just sure is going to be coming.

In other words, "008" could come off as parody or worse, no connection at all to the established 25 films behind them. I can understand this could be a reason to stick with the "007".
After that, 009 would just be a clown.

It's a big world and very white James Bond will stick out like a sore thumb in actuality in a lot of places. You don't really want your spies to be noticed so it would be more realistic having 00s be different genders and races. I want a cool Gurkha 00 for Asian missions.

007 is just a code name, so it doesn't matter who wears it. James Bond is a person. He can't be a woman (or Black or whatever). 007 can be anybody who is qualified.
Exactly.

00 agents change in the Fleming books. Bond may well not have even been the first 007.

Everyone's being too rational in this thread. Where's the passion, the hatred, the frothing at the mouth about SJWs, white genocide and the pressures of being a white male in the modern world? You're all so boringly mature.

Okay, so in all seriousness, this is a pretty cool idea and I'm all for it. Might be one of the best ideas the Bond franchise has had in years.

The only thing more tedious than "the outrage" over stuff like this is the non-outraged side trying to build it into an outrage.

I think it's actually kind of a cool idea. The problem is, the idiots are going still going to freak out, because all they'll hear is female 007.

That's not a "problem" for the producers. It's a feature, not a bug.

This is a cool idea, but in this case it's also clearly designed primarily to get a lot of publicity attention - and, rather cynically, to try to generate social media controversy. Bond is in the movie, Lynch is introduced early on as having been assigned the 007 designation, and it's vanishingly unlikely that the status quo of the series will change for very long - unless, of course, Lynch tremendously juices up the box office. In which case...

They're having their cake and eating it too.

Jesus, I had no idea Bond was such a quitter.
He quit in Casino Royale, Skyfall, and Spectre - and that last one isn't at all relevant, except it's the latest we've seen of him. Jesus, do you even watch Bond movies?

Nor that MI6 can't retire numbers like they do on sports teams..
Octpopussy showed 009 being killed. Over the decades 009 has been referred to multiple times indicating the position was replaced. Bond in Casino Royale mentioned that 00 agents had a short lifespan. Some other 00 agents were seen in Living Daylights and at least one was apparently killed, presumably replaced, also.

Yep, and off the top of my head he tendered his resignation in OHMSS and obviously he quit dramatically in Licence to Kill. He showed little care if he got fired in Living Daylights. Not an EON film, but he quit in Never Say Never Again, as well.

A way for them to dip their toe in the pool on the idea of expanding the 007 universe. I think it is a smart idea.
That is how I see it. If people like the character she will star in next movie. If not they just find someone else. Jason

I like this idea, its been tried before, even in the james bond series, with Jinx ( Hallie Berry) in that if there was good appeal, that she'd have her own spin off movie, never did happen, but I think there was a plan in place if it did.
So we shall see, and happy to see that there not "replaceing" James Bond, but just another person stepping in to the role.
But in everything.. it depends on how its written.. and how the audience will accept it.. so we'll see :)

Eh people will riot here if a nacelle is the wrong shade of white

Fan- It is cream color #100006! Not #1000005!

Let's just get some perspective before this blows up into a 10 page thread SJW war

James Bond is retired at the beginning of the movie. While he was away they gave his code name to a woman.

When he comes back he'll get it back.
I own all the Bond movies (including the original Casino Royale and Never Say Never Again) and enjoy each of them (I have favourites, but I’m entertained by all of them).

I really hope Bond dies in the next film. (Unlikely, but it’s what I’d like.)

That way, they could go with this new 007, offering a wide set of opportunities otherwise unavailable for future stories OR (never happen, but one can dream) start over with a period piece Bond—the Cold War 50s and 60s is where the character belongs. However, this is NOT a plea for the “good old days”—I’d want the period depicted with warts and all. Mad Men at its best, as it were.

But 007 is just a code name, so it doesn't matter who wears it. James Bond is a person. He can't be a woman (or Black or whatever). 007 can be anybody who is qualified.
They could go down the Casino Royale (1967) route and have the name and number passed on to his replacement.

Or what if not only 007 is a code name but the name james bond also?
That way al the previous actors can return for a cameo and we can have a colored James or Jane Bond.
And I am all for team work with the 00's
