News Lashana Lynch to be the new 007...

I just hope Cary Fukunaga is more sensible than Sam Mendes, and ensures Lynch doesn't sport a giant afro like Moneypenny in Skyfall:

I don't care what gender or ethnicity the field agent in question is; even apart from visibility issues, I'd think that that much hair would be a serious liability in combat. Why give your opponents a big ol' target on your head to easily grab, thereby causing you intense pain? Bond acted moronically a dozen times in the course of that movie, but at least he had a sensible haircut for fighting:

So, for that matter, did Jinx:

I love the way that all the media seem to be headlining this. Not unlike this thread - "Lashana Lynch to be the new 007...". Just enough info to cause outrage in those who don't read past the headline. Guaranteed click bait.

Having said that, I hope we do get to see some 007 action out of here, (i.e. some kind of mission) rather than it just being a brief (now spoiled) twist (ie. M says "Come in 007", and suddenly a black woman walks into the room instead of Daniel Craig. I mean, that scene is practically guaranteed but I hope there's a lot more to her 007 than just that.

I personally don't mind genderswitching all that much with characters. What does trouble me, and I think Rachel Weisz said this when asked about wether she would play a female 007, was that she wished people would stop putting women in excisting male roles and instead write new and interesting characters for women to play.

So instead of Lashana Lynch being 007 I would much rather have a movie set in the Bond universe but with her being 008 or 005 or whatever.

Yes, there could be far more action movies with women in the lead. But you can write all new characters for them, not (for example) remake Leathel Weapon with two women.

Boy.. these are tough times for bigots and racists.

First Arielle is now a black woman, now the 007 role is going to a woman (who is also black) - how will they manage?

I am not sure how i feel about that but as always it's up to the script and the performance if it works. Nobody thought of Craig being a good fit for the role and he delivered some of the best Bond movies ever so there's that.

I'm just a little disappointed that Idris Elba didn't get the role (maybe if he were 10 years younger) - that's my only gripe.

... but not James Bond. Lynch will play the new 007 called up after Daniel Craig's James Bond retires.
That would be the way to do it, if they were really going to do it.

She's exactly right. One of the worst things about this fad of recycling existing characters as women and minorities is that they will be remembered as mere tokens and novelties, and an opportunity to create a female or minority icon is missed every time.

But 007 is just a code name, so it doesn't matter who wears it. James Bond is a person. He can't be a woman (or Black or whatever). 007 can be anybody who is qualified.

007 is just a Code Number. Given that Bond quit at the end of the last movie, why wouldn't they give it to his replacement, just as he got it from whoever he replaced.

Jesus, I had no idea Bond was such a quitter.
Nor that MI6 can't retire numbers like they do on sports teams.

Thinking about this made me realize how much value there is in "007" for marketing. I, too would prefer a new character take another number, but if you imagine this new lady agent character turns to the camera and says, "I'm double-oh-eight."

It doesn't have the message, it doesn't have the confirmation that we *know* that if they say "double-oh-seven," they are with MI6/part of the James Bond mythology.

In other words, "008" could come off as parody or worse, no connection at all to the established 25 films behind them. I can understand this could be a reason to stick with the "007".

None of the Bond titles even reference the character James Bond.

That’s...not quite what is happening.

I doubt most of them will mind for the reasons people think they will. Bond fans are a little different to Trek fans (ignoring those who really really like both) in general sweeping descriptions of their political views.

There’s the bond fans discussing it much as trek fans would over here.

Bond is very different to Trek though. One character, not an overall thing with lots, soft rebooted as a matter of course, that sort of thing.

Personally? As I said over on the Brit section of these boards...they should have amped up Colin Salmon and span him off as 008 in the brosnan era, and also spun off a ‘moneypenny’ movie, with the ultimate cake and eat it scenario.

As I have also said elsewhere, a studio could pick up the Stella Rimington novels, and if they do a good job with it, start building the female Bondlike Everyone clamours for.

But as is inferred from Rachel Weisz’s great comment...no one wants to build. Easier to take something preexisting and change it...because that always works so well?

And as I also said elsewhere...the best female Bondlike screen hero was the first two Tomb Raider films with Angelina Jolie. Sure...she’s not a spy, but everything else about the formula was righ there in spades. They even made some money on them. But now we decry them for rampant sexism or something, and for some reason we never get more. Would an audience have got behind them? I guess we will never know now.

She's 007 not James Bond so I would class that as a new role. They are building a brand new character (presumably totally different from James). I'm very intrigued in this concept should they do it.

I wonder if James might actually die in this new movie? Jesus a female 007 and the death of James Bond...

Piers Morgan is going to have a stroke!
