I've never met a woman who wanted to be treated like shit, but I've met many who like to have to fight for it a bit. Guys who are aloof and don't put in much effort, take out their frustrations on their woman, etc. often also have appealing aspects (which is part of the reason they feel like they CAN act that way) that make a woman want to 'fix' them or just hold out for the good times. On the other hand, a guy who offers everything and wants nothing in return, becomes boring and expected. Wanting is more fun than having, and all that.

What's going on here? Why do we suddenly have so many of those needy male threads, which are superficial about something else but really are just insecure men saying "I'm a great person really, right?"

Is there something in the water?

No. That's pretty much par for the course. What isn't normal (at least from my history here) is the blatant sexism (in some cases, on both sides), which seems to be a recent phenomenon.

It comes down to a classic paradigm of human mating and western culture: Most (not all) women are single because they want to be. Few (very few) men are single because they want to be. Of the two, which ones do you think more likely to lash out in frustration?

I think we need a moratorium on these kinds of threads, until cooler heads prevail and people collect themselves. Even if, on the surface, they seem harmless, history suggests that there are cadres of people in this forum who are determined to continue the gender FAIL-war and will latch on to anything remotely linked to gender to do so.

That or, and God truly forbid it ever comes to this, they need a "People & Relationships" sub-forum, where they can obsess over women/men 24 hours a day. If we can have a sports forum on a Trek board, then this seems a logical next-step. They can lay it to waste with fail and spam and leave Misc to its food, shopping, tech support, pictures, health and Holdfast's fastidious fashion sense (which should have its own sub-forum).
