Lack of Dr. Blake in Thor Film

I don't know if we've talked about this issue before. But Dr. Donald Blake will not be in the upcoming film.

My only experience reading Thor was during J. Michael Straczynski run. But I liked Dr. Donald Blake. I like the idea of a human character that has a medical skillset that the God-like hero lacks. If a bystander is injured what can the hero do? I think also I'm going to miss the King/Excalibur aspect of the hammer in the film.

Do you guys think that the film is better off without Dr. Donald Blake?

the lack of Dr. Blake doesn't bother me. besides, they can always cover him in a sequel or something.

Honestly, Don Blake hasn't been part of the comics for decades now, and I'm not sure he was ever key to the comic's appeal. When I got hooked on THOR in the midsixties it was because of all the cool Asgardian stuff--frost giants and Norn Queens and the Warriors Three and such--and not because of Don Blake.

Unlike, say, Bruce Wayne or Clark Kent, the Blake identity also just kind of got in the way of the good stuff . . . .

I'm not bothered by it. He's acknowledged in the film but yeah maybe in the sequels after "Avengers" they'll have Thor adopt a name. Maybe Jake Olsen (who is the human persona I'm most familiar with).

I have to admit, it was because he was pining for that nurse. I was a sucker for soap opera when I was a kid.

I never quite understood the whole Blake thing anyway, but I was never a real reader of Thor, so...

...that said, I don't care if Blake is in it or not.

And besides, to your example, if the hero can do everything, hurt as well as heal the innocent bystander, well, then, that's boring. I would rather see Thor have to figure out something he's not good at. More drama in that.

Jane's a scientist in the film and not a nurse. I'm assuming that the writers of the film just decided they couldn't find a way to make these two characters work the same way they're depicted in the comics. Happens all the time in films.

BOYCOTTTTT!!!!!!!

And Blake almost never appeared in THE AVENGERS comics . . .

The problem with the Blake identity was that, unlike a reporter or playboy or self-employed inventor, a surgeon can't exactly run off to fight evil whenever he hears a crime for help.

"Nurse, pass me that scalpel . . . Wait! Ymir is attacking Midgard! Excuse me while I dash into the nearest supply closet and disappear for several hours . . . ."

Talk about a malpractice suit waiting to happen!

Eventually, Marvel just dropped the whole secret identity angle, especially once Thor started spending more and more time in Asgard and other fantasy realms.
