Spoilers Krall's Seemingly Inconsistent Appearance

GaiusBaltarBand

Lieutenant
Red Shirt
I put together a collage of some of the images of Krall from Beyond material after noticing Krall looks different in different shots. Any ideas as to what's going on here? In a few of the trailer shots Krall has distinctive spiky points reminiscent of a sea creature or snake. In the posters those points are subdued and smoothed over. Also his eyes appear red in the posters but yellow in the trailer. The two aliens at the terminal seem to be similar to Krall but not the same. The alien on the left terminal looks a lot like Krall on the posters less a middle forehead ridge.

Possibilities:

1) Krall's face flairs up when trying to intimidate, not unlike Dr. Phlox. This would be an interesting trait to the character.

2) The shot in the trailer of the alien on the computer terminal is not Krall, but some other alien. The two aliens at the computer look similar, but have notable differences. However, this doesn't explain the difference between the poster and other trailer shots.

3) Krall's race has different features somewhat like the Klingon's have different forehead ridges.

4) Like the Suliban, Krall's race genetically engineers themselves to be unique. This one is a stretch.

Well, two of those are artwork, so I would discount those as being in any way accurate. "artistic license"
Of the remaining 5, I would say different lighting on three with the fourth and fifth possibly being different characters (the one with ridges especially).

I should be more clear. He looks consistent in the trailer. There are obvious and notable differences on the poster. He looks far more similar to the left alien using the computer.

Perhaps it is just artistic license, but he has different colored eyes and different detailing in the trailer. Most obvious is his brow, chin, and forehead. Perhaps the detailing has been smoothed away with photoshop, but it's an odd thing to do.

To pose another question, why do the two aliens at the terminal look similar to Krall, but with notable differences? Perhaps the are three different races, but it seems too deliberate. If the possibilities are endless, why make three different races that are all grey and slightly different?

All the posters have smoothed away detail (horribly so in some cases), so it fits in perfectly.

Probably for the same reason you and I look similar but different. Or to Trek it up, the same reason Klingons have a unified look but vary from person to person.

The three actual photos of Krall look the same, the two depictions from the poster use artistic license, and the two guys at the console look slightly different because of racial variations or intermixing with other species.

Not to mention that at the time the teaser was released they were still tweaking appearances and may even still be doing so up until the movie is released for that very reason, consistency.

I have been wondering if his appearance becomes more gargoyle-ish the angrier he gets. Comparing the scene where he's on the Enterprise to the one where he's reading Kirk's file was most noticeable for me.

As for the rest of the Swarm, I'm pretty sure they're made up of at least three species.

Why are you assuming that's Krall? If that character looks so different, it makes more sense to assume it's another character.

Don't see any differences that can't be explained by lighting.

These 2 have really obvious differences. The lefthand one is similar, but has differences in the cheek to temple ridges, and the righthand one has forehead ridges and nose & chin creases that aren't present on any of the other instances.

Probably different individuals, but it would be pretty cool if his facial features morphed with different emotional states in a way that allows more of the actor to show through the makeup.

"Krall" and "Jeyla" could they have picked more generic, cheesy alien names?

Yep. They could have gone with K'Rall and Jay-Lah. :p

Turns out, Simon Pegg was competing against Jennifer Lawrence and singer Diana Krall on Celebrity Jeopardy, and when Krall brutally attacked Pegg's performance with a swarm of insults, JLaw bravely came to his defense. The names of the alien antagonist and the crew's new friend were born from Pegg's day of public embarrassment. ;)

Also, Jayla/Jaylah is a not totally unknown (#238 in the US) real name, produced from a combination of Jada and Kayla. It sounds unusual but still pleasing to the ear and easy to pronounce, which is good:

Yes, they could have. I rather like the names, especially Jeyla's.

Sounds like the kind of generic character names you'd find on Andromeda or Stargate Atlantis. As uninspired as the rest of the film seems to be.

Please, enlighten us with what proper, non-generic alien names should look like, and how that elevates the inspiration level of the rest of the film.
