Kong Skull Island Review (No Spoilers... for now)

Just saw an advance showing of Kong: Skull Island. It was fun.

Without spoiling anything, I will just say it's a fun gratuitous action movie. I felt that Kong himself and the other denizens of Skull Island were well-realized. I didn't catch very many nods to earlier incarnations of Kong, but this movie seems to stand apart from any earlier King Kong continuity. It has nothing to do with the Peter Jackson version.

On the other hand, it does tie into the latest Godzilla picture and it's clear that they're setting up a franchise of TOHO style monster films. (the friend I attended this movie with said that was pretty well-known already and I'm just the last man who didn't already know that, so this may or may not be a surprise for you.)

Kong Skull Island is kind of a mash-up between a TOHO Kaiju movie and a Viet Nam War film, but it seemed to me to have trouble finding its tone. Sometimes it felt like it was trying to echo more serious war movies, but was never quite able to make it work. There are super gratuitous action moments and one particular scene that really stood out to me as being so over the top that it took me out of the movie for a bit. (I won't go into which moment yet, as I want to keep this spoiler-free). I do expect some measure of this sort of amplified action in this sort of feature, and other areas where it went over the top were less egregious... but--well--Maybe we'll talk about it after more people have seen the movie.

Also there were moments of comedy that, while actually pretty funny, kinda came out of no where. I enjoyed the laughs, but it didn't help the movie in figuring out its tone.

All that said, despite its flaws, I came out of the theater having enjoyed the movie. I'd see it again and I'd recommend it to anyone who likes big action movies that no one's inviting you to think through too hard.

A review thread without spoilers? interesting. As for what I've read of this, I'll pass for now, I may sit down on watch it when it appears on Amazon Prime or Netflix.

I have never been a King Kong fan. Would someone like me enjoy the film?

Possibly. What turns you off about Kong? So far, most of the Kong movies feature a giant gorilla being captured, brought to New York as some sort of zoo specimen and then he runs amok and climbs a very tall building.

MINOR SPOILERS TO FOLLOW
(I guess I don't know how to add the "spoiler" formatting)

This movie has none of that. Kong remains confined to Skull Island for the entire movie. An American Army unit makes efforts to kill him in situ on Skull Island, rather than removing him from there. He also fights other giant creatures, also native to Skull Island. While there is an attractive young woman who seems to be in the movie just to have an attractive woman in the film, she in no way fills any kind of Ann Darrow role. At no point does Kong develop any sort of emotional attachment to any specific human, female or otherwise. Most of the traditional King Kong plot points are absent from this.

Really, it feels more like a Marvel (MCU) movie than your usual Kong movie. It's just a fun action movie. If you're just not interested in movies that include impossibly huge gorillas, it might not be your thing. As I said above, it's less of the King Kong movies you've seen before and more of a Viet Nam War movie mashed up with a Japanese Kaiju film.

Thanks for the reply, Alex. I just never got into the King Kong movies much. They just seemed, I don't know, a little lame I guess. The original and the remakes I have seen had that formula of King Kong captured, falls in love with girl, brought to big city, escapes, climbs building, etc. etc. What you described though is a little different. Maybe I will give it a look when it comes to Netflix or something.

There is none of the stuff you talked about in Skull Island.
We do see Kong save Bree Larson's character a little while after their first have a face to face, but that's it.
If anyone is interested, since the movie is out I went ahead and started a spoiler review thread.
